Unshaven and with his checked robe displaying a large amount of chest hair, a yawning Stewart greets Colbert at the door of his hut in the woods.

Having lived an off-the-grid lifestyle since his retirement, Stewart does not know which Republican is hoping to become the next President of the United States.

On learning the news, Stewart spits his tea into Colbert's face and asks: 'The guy from The Apprentice? The guy who did a McDonalds commercial with the Grimace?...

'The guy whose eyes look like tiny versions of his mouth? A guy who looks like he's actually wearing a Donald Trump costume?

'The guy who wrote, and I quote: "Oftentimes when I was sleeping with one of the top women in the world, I would say to myself 'Can you believe what I'm getting?'" That guy?'

Earlier this year, the former The Daily Show host, made time to share his candid thoughts on Trump.

At the University of Chicago Institute of Politics, Stewart joked that he wasn't sure if Trump was even eligible for the presidential nomination.

'I'm not here to be politically incorrect, if they're referred to as man-baby Americans… but he is a man-baby.'

'I'm not a constitutional scholar, so I can't necessarily say, but are you eligible to run if you are a man-baby, or a baby-man?' he asked, adding: 'He has the physical countenance of a man and a baby's temperament and hands.'

Stewart went on to describe Trump as an 'unrepentant narcissistic a******'.

And in December, Stewart briefly came out of retirement to appear on The Late Show with a memorable Trump impression, wearing a blond comb-over wig and orange Cheetos dust on his face.

The skit with Stewart was just one of Colbert's attacks on Trump on Monday night, part of The Late Show's live coverage of the Republican convention, from July 18 to 21, and the Democratic convention, from July 25 to 28.

Kicking off the show, a flamboyant Colbert, who wore a glittering stars and stripes waistcoat, bright red bow tie and a straw hat, performed a naughty tongue-in-cheek song about the convention, which he says is 'like Christmas in July.'

He mocked Trump's rock star entrance into the Republican National Convention in Cleveland - a silhouette emerging as Queen's We Are The Champions played.

And he brought up the subject of Trump and his running mate Mike Pence's first campaign logo, which was described as 'suggestive'.

Colbert has nicknamed this year's GOP convention the The 2016 Trumpublican Donational Conventrump, Starring Donald Trump As the Republican Party.

His name for the Democratic event is The 2016 Democratic National Convincing a Technically Historic Event: Death. Taxes. Hillary.
