Summer (hair) school is in session! Stylist for the Kardashians shares her top tips for beating the heat to get beachy waves like Khloe or sleek strands like Kim

  • Jen Atkin is the Kardashian-Jenner sisters' longtime hairstylist
  • Jen is also the founder of haircare brand, Ouai
  • The pro offered summer hair tricks on sephora.com last week

Whether she's jetting off to Lake Como with Chrissy Teigen, Calabasas with the Kardashians or Cannes with Bella Hadid, it seems as though hairstylist Jen Atkin is never not busy tending to the best heads of hair on your Instagram feed.

But last Friday, the mane master and founder of buzzy haircare brand Ouai (pronounced 'way'), took some of her precious time to dole out summer hair advice to those of us without a glam squad on hand to tame our every flyaway.

During the live chat, which appeared on sephora.com, Jen detailed her top tips for duplicating her signature, cool girl waves and fighting frizz, and offered fresh haircut ideas that will have you running to the salon.

Read on below for those tricks and more highlights from the chat.

THE OUAI TO WAVE

Jen is a master at creating bends that are red-carpet ready and effortless all at once. To nail the technique at home, Jen recommends taking small, one-inch sections of hair and wrapping each around a curling iron with a one-inch barrel in the direction away from the face.

'After you complete the whole head, use a flat iron to lightly go over random sections so that each one isn't so uniform.' Finish by flat ironing ends straight.

No curling iron? No problem. The hairstylist also detailed two genius ways to achieve tousled waves without the heat tool.

'Spray Ouai Wave Spray on your damp hair [at night] and braid your hair into one to three braids depending on how much hair you have.' Use blow-dryer on the braids in the morning before you take them out to help set the wave.'

If any pieces are too crimped, she said you can loosen the wave by running a flat iron over the area.

She's also 'obsessed' with 'the Clip Trick.'

This method involves applying mousse to damp hair and then placing duck bill clips down the lengths of large sections, pushing hair up to create a bubble effect in between each clip.

'Let the hair air dry, then remove the clips and you've got a perfect natural looking beach wave,' said Jen.

FIGHT FRIZZ LIKE A PRO

'If you know you’re going to be spending a lot of time outside, prep your roots with dry shampoo,' said Jen. 'It will not only prevent your hair from looking greasy or sweaty, but it will continue to absorb throughout the day while providing UV protection.'

Bella sleek: To help strands stay straight in the humid weather like Bella Hadid's did at Cannes in May, Jen recommends spritzing hairspray onto a paddle brush before grooming

She also recommends spritzing hairspray (try her brand's Soft Hair Spray) into a paddle brush before brushing hair to tame flyaways and frizz. 'It provides major anti-humidity protection!' she said.

To smooth thick, unruly hair, Jen advises trying the brush trick and then flat ironing hair in very small sections. 'The smaller the section the more control you will have.'

STYLE YOUR HAIR LIKE A KARDASHIAN (AND CUT IT LIKE JENNA DEWAN-TATUM)

There's no better way to get long hair off of your neck this summer than with a top knot. Of the style, which Jen recently created on Kim Kardashian, she said,'[it's] super versatile. You can make it messy or sleek!'

If you're ready for a new look, Jen recommends going for a collar-bone-grazing cut. The length, she said, is 'so chic'.

And once temperatures begin to cool down, you might want to consider bangs.

'I always love a fringe in the fall! It's a great way to change up your look for the new season without having to drastically take length off.' She's a fan of a side swept or straight across, blunt looks.
