'Pocahontas' revenge: Elizabeth Warren brings slings and arrows to Democratic convention in Philly and takes on 'bully' Donald Trump with stem-winding keynote speech, says GOP campaign is a 'late-night infomercial'

  • Warren became a liberal icon when she helped create a financial control board, then got elected to the Senate
  • She blasted Trump as 'a man who cares only for himself'
  • Mocked his 'stupid' border wall
  • She opted not to run for president and endorsed Hillary Clinton
  • Has since become one of Clinton's most vocal and important defenders
  • Clinton considered Warren for VP before opting for Senator Tim Kaine
  • Donald Trump has blasted her as 'Pocahontas' because of past claims of Native American heritage

Liberal firebrand Elizabeth tried to undertake the delicate task of reeling enraged Bernie Sanders backers into the fold by showering praise on her kindred spirit from the Senate and ripping into both Donald Trump and the 'rigged' financial system.

'Trumps’ entire campaign is just one more late-night Trump infomercial,' Warren told an enthusiastic convention crowd. 'And for one low low price he’ll even throw in a goofy hat.'

Warren, represents the Sanders wing of the party, but nevertheless made an emphatic case for electing Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump.

The Massachusetts senator served as a key validator in a hall, which had split throughout the night whenever speakers mentioned Hillary Clinton's name.

'Bernie reminds us what Democrats fight for every day. Thank you Bernie. Thank you,' she said at the top of her remarks, praising Clinton's defeated rival.

Then she started taking apart Trump.

'On one side is a man who inherited a fortune from his father and kept it going by cheating people by skipping out on debts. A man who cares only for himself every minute of every day,' she said, to hoots of approval.

'On the other side is one of the smartest toughest most tenacious people on this planet. A woman who fights for children for women for health care, for women’s rights,' said Warren. A woman who fights for all of us and who is strong enough to win those fights.'

'Other than talking about building a stupid wall which will never get built, other than that wall, did you hear any actual ideas?' Warren asked the crowd, who responded, 'No!'

'Did you hear even one solid proposal from Trump for increasing incomes or improving your kids’ education. Or creating even one single good paying job?' she asked.

Warren said Trump had 'no plans to make anything great for anyone except for rich guys like Donald Trump.'

Warren, who was pushed by liberals who were suspicious of Clinton to seek the presidency, left no doubt which side she was on.

'We are here today because our choice is Hillary Clinton. I’m with Hillary,' she said. 'You know, for me this choice is personal,' she added.

She laced her remarks with references to Clinton's running mate, senator Tim Kaine, who got boos at the start of the convention when his name was mentioned. Many Sanders backers in the hall aren't satisfied with him, in part because of his support for trade deals.

'People get it. The system is rigged. It’s true,' Warren said, evoking language used by both Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders.

'So to every Republican in Congress who said no, this November, the American people are coming for you,' she said, in a red meat line that got the crowd going.

Trump, who has repeatedly called Warren 'Pocahontas', because of prior claims she made about having Native American heritage, tweeted after the speech: 'Elizabeth Warren, often referred to as Pocahontas, just misrepresented me and spoke glowingly about Crooked Hillary, who she always hated!'

Later, the Trump campaign released a statement on Warren.

Stephen Miller, Senior Policy Adviser, said: 'Warren complains about Wall Street influence while endorsing the candidate who is bought-and-paid for by Wall Street.

'Bill and Hillary use Wall Street like a personal ATM, giving speeches and doing favors for cash.

'The income inequality in America today is the product of the Hillary Clinton corporate agenda on trade and immigration. Clinton is a radical corporatist, and Donald Trump is the one and only the only candidate taking on the special interests in government.

'Just follow the money flowing into the Clinton bank account - and the money flowing against the people's champion, Mr Trump.

'By the way - if we'd built that wall Warren calls "stupid" years ago, wonderful Americans like Jamiel Shaw, Police Sgt. Brandon Mendoza, Dominic Durden, Josh Wilkerson, Sara Root, and so many others would be alive today. Thousands would never have been victimized by cartels, traffickers and smugglers. Millions of young minority workers would have jobs. Why aren't these voiceless victims worthy of Warren's concern?'

Warren was introduced by Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy III, who took her class at Harvard, and told a story about getting badgered by his professor for not knowing the definition of a word.

'I never showed up unprepared for professor Elizabeth Warren ever again,' Kennedy said. She was the toughest teacher on campus but the wait list for her class was a mile long.

'She pushed us hard. She brought out our best. She believed in us.'
