Now for the Twitter-lympics! Teams do battle on social media for the funniest Rio posts with 'dancing moobs', naked ‘Gollum’, Usain Bolt joking around... and the miserable Russians moaning about (almost) EVERYTHING

  • Games only officially start on Friday but many Olympians already in Brazil
  • So athletes from across the world have been sharing pictures from Rio
  • From dive bombing Czechs, to Zimbabwe's synchronized swimmers and Aussies hitting the beach, they are all getting in on the act
  • But who is winning when it comes to social media? MailOnline compares...

Rio 2016 may only officially start on Friday, but it seems the Games have already begun for the world's best athletes... in the joke stakes at least.

Fun-loving competitors from around the globe have been showing off how they've been filing their time as the clock ticks down to the greatest show on earth.

From naked room-mates to silly selfies and more than a few hilarious videos, team spirits are clearly on high ahead of the Opening Ceremony - and sharing the fun on social media.

Here, MailOnline takes a look at what they are up to... and found ballad singing basketball players, dive-bombing Czech rowers and Usain Bolt, being, well... Usain Bolt.

Britain has already won gold for pranks, the Canadians are leading the happy stakes, but the Russians are less than impressed with, well, everything.

GREAT BRITAIN: FIRST FOR TEAM SPIRIT (AND PRANKS)

If there's one thing Team GB cannot be accused of it's lacking team spirit and a sense of humour.

It just so happens that their competitive edge comes with a fair amount of leg pulling at their team-mates' expense.

And luckily for the fans back home, they are sharing all the results on Twitter.

Take gold medal hopeful Luke Patience, who shared this naked photo of his unfortunate, and as yet unidentified roommate - joking: 'Sharing a room with gollum is hard work #BringOnTheGreat #bringontheclothes.'

Not to be outdone, runner Tom Farrell was getting in on the jokes - before he had even left for the airport with the perfect prank on housemate, Olympic walker Tom Bosworth.

Hiding in a cupboard, he pretended the house was empty before leaping out to surprise unsuspecting Bosworth.

'Locked the door and made it seem as if the apartment was empty....surprise,' Farrell wrote - and shared a video of a shocked Bosworth with his followers.

'Moobs': The daring video showed the sprinter's pecs bouncing along to Rihanna song Work

But it isn't just pranks being played on each other. When waiting around for your turn on the track, boredom sets in as TeamGB sprinter Harry Aikines-Aryeetey has found.

As he waited to blast down the track, the 27 filmed himself making his 'moobs' dance as his pecs bounced along to Rihanna's hit 'Work'.

Not that Aikines-Aryeetey's 'moob twerking' went down well with fellow athlete 4x100m relay runner Ashleigh Nelson.

She wrote: 'I'm here taking selfies mean while @HarryAA100m  & his pecs are twerking in the corner...What's happened?'

AUSTRALIA: GOING FOR GOLD IN THE FUN STAKES

The Australia team didn't get off to the best start to Rio 2016.

The team said dirty bedrooms, leaking ceilings and exposed wires made their accommodation 'unliveable' and they refused to move in.

But after organisers carried out vital repairs the team in gold and green have got their sense of humour back... and can see the funny side.

From joking around in their pink Zika-proof mosquito nets like basket ball stars Elizabeth Cambage and Tessa Lavey, to showing humility like Thanasi Kokkinakis after his tennis racquets were lost by his airline, the Aussies are winning gold in the fun stakes.

USA: WHEN LITTLE MET LARGE...

What happens when the tiniest member of the team meets the tallest? If you're Team USA, a great Twitter pic.

At 4ft 8in, pocket-sized Simone Biles is the new darling of USA gymnastics. So when she spotted US men’s volleyball player 6ft 8in David Lee towering above her in the treatment room, she saw a great opportunity.

Not to be outdone, the US women’s soccer team showed they are on point with their Twitter game - as goalkeeper Hope Solo took delight in taking a photo Megan Rapinoe's  exposed bottom when she crouched down to take a team selfie.

The men’s basketball team wouldn't be outdone at the Games. They showed confidence is sky high in a series of hilarious Instagram videos of them singing Vanessa Carlton’s 'A Thousand Miles'.

But not everyone was impressed as teammate Carmelo Anthony proved as he reacted by looking miserable and rolling his eyes.

JAMAICA: USAIN BOLT MAKES A PLAY FOR TOP SPOT

It is a universally acknowledged truth that anything Usain Bolt touches turns to gold.

And Jamaica's self-styled 'Mr Cool' and the fastest man on the planet, has proved he is the best on social media posts too.

Whether it be posing with the heavily armed Brazilian navy, or taking the time to visit the kids of Rio's favelas, his snaps show he he brings a sprinkling of stardust to the Games.

However, he isn't the only Jamaican with game on Instagram: fellow runner Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has been sporting some rather amazing yellow and gold hair, putting other athletes attempt at patriotic nails into the shade.

Meanwhile, the Caribbean country's swimmers Timothy Wynter and Alia Atkinson have also made an appearance - taking dip in a what appears to be a children's paddling pool.

But looks can be deceiving as they actually cooling off in an ice bath after a hard day's training.

RUSSIA: EMBRACING THE OLYMPIC SPIRIT

It's fair to say that Russia has had a troubled start to Rio with their very participation in doubt until the last minute after its state-sponsored doing programme.

But now they are in Rio, they are determined put their troubles behind them.

One swimmer was so determined to show of his Games spirit he apparently managed to blow the five Olympic rings while under the water.

The synchronised swimming team, meanwhile, have embraced one of Brazil's most famous pastimes: by hitting the beach the beach.

However, they have been taken aback by the temperature in Rio - taking a snap of themselves wrapped up warm on the poolside.

Vlada Chigiryova, who shared the image, wrote:  'We were not feeling so cold for a long time, it just makes you cry, and even hot tea does not help.

'Your muscles get frozen, you can't operate your body and wind literally carries you to the other side of the pool.'

There have been other complaints as well - at least one surrounding the quality of coffee.

'Brazil is a capital of coffee but the coffee we get in the canteen is not tasty,' moaned Natalia Goncharova, a Russian volleyball competitor who blogs for Life.ru.

'Italian coaches of the Russian male team knew it ahead and even brought a coffee-machine. They live just one floor above us but we don't want to push them for sharing it with us yet.'

Here's hoping Italian-Russian relations stay strong.

POLAND: PLANNING TO CLEAN UP (LITERALLY)

Polish athletes plan to clean up at Rio2016 - starting with their hotel rooms.

Artur Mikolajczewski, 26, who represents Poland in rowing posted these photos of his filthy room in the Brazilian Olympic Games city.

In one, the rowing champ shows a filthy mattress. Another shows a grim bathroom sink, while another shows a broken wall socket.

Mikolajczewski wrote: 'At first glance, everything seemed beautiful, pretty, with new skyscrapers and a nicely prepared village but what we found inside the building is, to put it gently, a tragedy.

'Just dirt and filth. At the moment we are faced with piles of dust and a toilet that doesn't work.

'We don't even have clean beds - just dirty mattresses without sheets.'

He then posted a photo of himself cleaning the windows of the hotel before going outside and sitting on a Rio2016 sign and pretending to row it home.

He was joined by the Poland's Olympic handball team who uploaded pics of themselves cleaning up their filthy hotel room.

GERMANY: PUZZLES AND PROBLEMS IN RIO

The Germans are known to be serious people, so perhaps it is no surprise that the team eschews silly selfies in favour of a good puzzle.

Because that is exactly how the country's canoe slalom team spent their evening - even sharing a picture of the excitement of the 1,500 piece puzzle with their followers.

There were more serious problems to be dealt with though.

Advice on what colour bag to take backfired somewhat, according to Germany's official Olympics Twitter feed which posted a picture of dozens of red suitcases at Rio's airport.

'We have landed. Take the red ones, they said, they are easy to find,' they wrote.

'But which one belongs to whom?'

Baggage: It turns out even the organised Germans get things wrong sometimes. 'Take the red ones, they said, they are easy to find. But which one belongs to whom?'

CZECH REPUBLIC: SHOWING THE GERMANS HOW ITS DONE

If the Germans are taking life a tad too seriously, the same cannot be said for their neighbours from the Czech Republic.

The Czech team is clearly loving life in Rio - touring the Olympic Village by scooter, sipping from coconuts on the beach and dive bombing into the pool.

And then there's their little mascot stickman who has made a few appearances jumping from one balcony to another....

CANADA: TAKING THE SELFIE CROWN

It's not the award the Canadians thought they'd be taking home from Rio, but the medal for best selfies surely has to go to them.

Canada's hockey team showed off one of the best selfies of the tournament, overlooking Rio from the base of Christ the Redeemer.

But their skills aren't confined to tourist attractions: this team can turn a walk around the Olympic Park into the perfect selfie moment - as proved by Rudy Verhoef, a volleyball player.

It's not just selfies, either. They've been getting creative with their poses on the Olympic rings in the village, and been crowding around the Games mascots for some of the smiliest pictures of Rio so far.

SOUTH AFRICA: WORKING HARD (BUT HAVING FUN)

The South African rowing team are certainly taking the Games seriously  - but are managing the odd Instagram post in between training.

Kate Christowitz shared a picture of the female rowers relaxing in the ice baths after 'a slightly hard six km'.

But the boys weren't going to be beaten, with  James Thompson sharing a picture of a very empty canteen at 5am in the morning.

The rowers might be working hard already, but the rugby sevens team was making the most of a bit of downtime after the long flight from South Africa.

Seabelo Senatla was delighted to discover his first Brazilian palm tree, along with a refreshing coconut.

Teammate Philip Snyman meanwhile shared a snap of himself under Christ the Redeemer during a spot of sightseeing.

Gold medal hope Caster Semenya, meanwhile, had awarded herself a 'cheat day'.
