'I love that costume!' Margot Robbie reveals that her Harley Quinn outfit in Suicide Squad was inspired by rock-star Debbie Harry

She is seen strutting her stuff in a pair of sequinned shorts and a hole-ridden T-shirt promotional teasers for the upcoming Suicide Squad film.

And Margot Robbie, who plays Harley Quinn in the much-hyped film, has revealed that her gaudy on-screen attire was inspired by none other than the lead singer of punk-rock band Blondie, Debbie Harry. 

Speaking to 2DAY FM's Rove And Sam this week, the 26-year-old blonde revealed: 'I tried on like 100 different variations of the costume but when I saw a picture of- we found this picture of Debbie Harry- and I was like, 'That's it, that is dope'.'

'So I love that costume,' she added. 

In 1976, Debbie famously donned a pair of micro-shorts and a ripped T-shirt similar to that worn by Margot in Suicide Squad forty years later. 

Earlier this year, Margot hit back at critics claiming that her scant Harley Quinn costume was degrading.

Speaking to the New York Times, Margot explained that her character wore 'hot pants because they’re sparkly and fun' not because 'she wanted guys to look at her ass'.

She added: 'As Margot, no, I don’t like wearing that.

'I’m eating burgers at lunch time, and then you go do a scene where you’re hosed down and soaking wet in a white T-shirt, it’s so clingy and you’re self-conscious about it.'

Suicide Squad is the infamous DC Comics 'supervillain' team recruited from prison by the government to fight evil in exchange for clemency.

Along with Harley Quinn, the squad includes Jared Leto as The Joker, Joel Kinnaman as team leader Rick Flagg, Will Smith as Deadshot, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Adam Beach as Slipknot, Karen Fukuhara as TKatana and Jay Hernandez as El Diablo.

The movie, which opens on August 4 in Australia, will also feature an appearance from Ben Affleck as Batman.
