The first lady was just one of many wishing the president a happy birthday in his last months in office.

Vice President Joe Biden also gave shout out to the birthday boy on Twitter, tweeting a photo of a friendship bracelet with both of their names on it.

'Happy 55th birthday Barack! A brother to me, a best friend forever,' Biden wrote.

While it may be his special day, work continues as usual for the president, who is scheduled to give a press conference from the Pentagon this afternoon.

Also on Thursday, Glamour published an essay from Obama, detailing why he identifies a 'feminist'.

While he acknowledges that our society is far less sexist than it used to be, there is more work to be done to ensure that men and women are treated equally.

The inspiration for the essay was clearly Mrs Obama and their two daughters, who he spoke of fondly.

As for his wife, he admitted that his work schedule has meant that the burden of childcare has 'disproportionately and unfairly fell on Michelle'.

If we want to get to a point where men are just as likely to be stay-at-home parents as mothers, Obama said men need to acknowledge the reality of sexism and work to fight it.

'We need to keep changing the attitude that congratulates men for changing a diaper, stigmatizes full-time dads, and penalizes working mothers. We need to keep changing the attitude that values being confident, competitive, and ambitious in the workplace—unless you’re a woman. Then you’re being too bossy, and suddenly the very qualities you thought were necessary for success end up holding you back,' he wrote.
