'Death came so close': Parks and Rec star Aubrey Plaza reveals she suffered a stroke at 20 years old that left her mute and paralysed

She's known for her hilarious non-expressive one-liners on Parks and Recreation.

But Aubrey Plaza, 33, has revealed that she almost had to give up on her dream of being an actress after suffering a stroke at the age of 20 that left her temporarily mute and paralysed. 

After becoming a household name and ALMA Award winner, she has spoken of the traumatic incident that left her unable to communicate or express herself, including the inability to write her thoughts.

Speaking to The Guardian newspaper about her harrowing experience, Aubrey explained: 'I had expressive aphasia, where I could understand what's happening, but I couldn't talk or communicate. 

'Like, you could say something and I would know what you meant but I couldn't express it or even write it.'

She revealed the short-term effect was so severe that whilst she was aware of what to do, if she was handed a pen and paper she couldn't write any words.

Despite being terrified about being in that state long-term, she took a very philosophical approach to her condition, explaining that she was 'lucky' her young brain managed to heal and overcome the temporary paralysis.  

While shooting her latest film Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates she discovered her co-star Adam Devine had a similarly traumatic experience when he was younger after being so severely injured he lost the use of his legs. 

The 32-year-old Pitch Perfect actor was hit by a cement truck and as a result of his injuries he had to learn to walk again, and his co-star believes their experiences have left them with a similar outlook on life.

She explained: 'Things take on a different meaning when death comes so close. I was older but he was still growing, and his thing was much more directly physical.'

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates also stars Anna Kendrick and Zac Efron. 

It's slated for release on August 10 in UK cinemas.
