'It was in the air': Gwen Stefani talks about the sparks she felt with Blake Shelton... and how she endured 'months of torture' before divorce from Gavin Rossdale

The Voice promoted those sparks between Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton even before the show's two mentors knew they were there.

The 46-year-old singer revealed details about her romance with the 40-year-old country star and those emotional first weeks together in the September issue of Cosmopolitan.

The attraction was there from the beginning with Gwen confiding, 'It was like it was in the air - happening before it happened.'

It's easy to see what Blake saw in Gwen, who models an array of unique designs for the magazine's cover spread.

Those outfits include a grey trench coat heavily embellished with beaded artwork and a sheer star-patterned number over black crop top and briefs while the cover featured Gwen in a shimmery bronze mini-dress with cleavage-baring chain-link front.

The story of Gwen and Blake also proves an interesting subject in the accompanying interview.

Be a golden goddess in an embellished dress like Gwen

Gwen Stefani is Cosmopolitan magazine's latest cover girl for September and we couldn't be more pleased. We love that she's not afraid to take risks when it comes to fashion. There's no playing it safe for this glam diva!

The blonde beauty wore a dress by Michael Kors on the front page. The gold number was embellished with a floral applique and metal rings and it also had a cutout design along the bodice. Gwen teamed it with a pair of fishnet tights and had a perfectly pretty pink pout.

You won't find her dress online as it won't be available for the next several months. So in the meantime shop the brand's current offerings at Net-A-Porter by clicking right.

Even as they suffered the fallout from their respective divorces from Gavin Rossdale and Miranda Lambert, there was something there and everyone seemed to realise it before these two did.

Gwen and Blake sure looked like they were getting along vivaciously during her second season on the talent competition show.

'We were laughing our heads off when we saw the blind auditions,' Gwen recalled to Cosmopolitan. 'I love NBC, but they for sure edited stuff to look like we were flirting.

'They chose to run with that story before anything was even real. I hardly knew him. But it was like it was in the air - happening before it happened.'

Writing Go Ahead, Break My Heart helped to bring Gwen and Blake closer, Stefani told Cosmopolitan.

'It was like, I have so many problems. How can I now be getting into another potentially huge problem? What am I doing?'

'Blake wrote the song and sent it to me. He was like, “Help me finish it.” I wrote a verse and sent it to him, but he was gone because he doesn’t live in L.A. He didn’t have Wi-Fi, so he wasn’t answering me back!'

Gwen continued: 'As soon as he came back to town, he brought his guitar over. We were like, “We wrote a song together! This is crazy!””

The platinum-blonde beauty said she suffered 'months and months of torture' with Gavin Rossdale, who reportedly cheated on her with the children's nanny.

Gwen's keeping the specifics of what went down under close guard.

'Nobody except for my parents, the people involved, and whoever they told,' Gwen told Cosmopolitan.

'Nobody would believe it if I could really say what happened. I went through months and months of torture.”

When asked if she knew whether 'something was going on', Gwen replied: 'All you have to do is listen to every single song I’ve ever written and it’s all there. It’s an ongoing theme that I’ve had for a long time.'
