Going back to his roots! Silver fox Colin Farrell reveals drastically greying hair as he touches down in Los Angeles

There were shades of the silver fox about Colin Farrell as he made his way across LAX Airport in Los Angeles on Wednesday evening.

Clearly greying at the roots, the Irish heartthrob’s salt and pepper hair caught the eye as he made his way through the arrivals lounge, a heavy bag slung across one shoulder.

The look was enhanced by some bushy beard growth and suggested Colin, 40, has chosen to embrace an altogether more natural appearance.

It was altogether different to his appearance at The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Benefit Gala in May, during which he showed no trace of grey hair.

Likewise the following month, when Colin modeled a thick head of black hair during a visit to the Hollywood studio of chat show host Jimmy Kimmel.

The sudden appearance of grey suggests the actor - who will return to cinema screens in Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them this November - has dyed his hair for a new role.

It wouldn't be the first time Colin has made changes to his appearance for the sake of film.

In May the actor told Kimmell how just how he went about gaining  weight for his role in critically acclaimed dramedy The Lobster.

'I gained about 40 to 45 pounds. The director said if he [the character] was too thin then there would be "a psychological issue, we don’t want to confuse the audience."'

He went on to detail his nutrition regimen, which went on for eight weeks before the shoot.

'I ate cheeseburgers for breakfast, for 48 hours,' he revealed, before cheekily describing another weight gain secret.

'You get used to sleeping with crumbs in the bed, my first meal of the day for two months was whatever crumbs I didn’t get to finish the night before.'
