JONATHAN McEVOY AT THE RIO AQUATICS CENTRE: Adam Peaty, who said he started life without privilege and hated water as a boy, has become the first British gold medallist of Rio 2016. But he did far more than simply that. In the space of 57.13 sec, he destroyed his own world record, he honoured his country, and he sent seismic waves bouncing across the swimming world. He smiled a boyish smile. He looked at the clock. He hugged the vanquished. He held his hands to his side. He punched his fist.

Jose Mourinho insists substitute Juan Mata was 'fine' after coming off

Jose Mourinho faced an awkward situation in the closing moments of United's win over Leicester in the Community Shield when he substituted Juan Mata less than half an hour after bringing him off the bench. BBC Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy blasted Mourinho for embarrassing Mata.

The Champions League, we are frequently reminded, is under threat from cartels to the east and west, in cahoots with the elite clubs of Europe.

Manchester United 2-1 Leicester City: FA Cup winners secure Community Shield as Zlatan

MANCHESTER UNITED 2-1 LEICESTER CITY - IAN LADYMAN AT WEMBLEY: Jose Mourinho has said that he needs to change his team's instincts if he is to succeed where Louis van Gaal failed at Manchester United. It is safe to assume that does not apply to all his players.  Mourinho will not try to change Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He will not try to mess with the formula. He will merely try to provide a platform on which his new centre forward can flourish and if he can manage that, Ibrahimovic may well repay him in spades. Already, only 90 minutes into his year at Old Trafford, Ibrahimovic has won his team a game. In doing that, he won them a trophy.

Leicester City have been written off by many this summer but Claudio Ranieri's men look

Throughout the summer the question never seems to have been whether Leicester City can retain the title they so deservedly won, but instead how badly the defence will go. It seems almost impossible to find people who are tipping them for the top four, never mind a place atop the table. The scepticism is understandable. The whole thing still feels like a fever dream. Pre-match, the Leicester end turned as one to watch the highlights from their Premier League winning season on the big screen, as if they needed confirmation that it had actually happened. Jamie Vardy's long-range strike against Liverpool drew a huge cheer, Wes Morgan lifting the trophy an even bigger one.

Jose Mourinho has told Paul Pogba that Manchester United is the 'perfect' club to help him become the best player in world football. He has no doubts Pogba has made the right decision.

Many Manchester United fans would have been pleased to see the back of Louis van Gaal, but Jose Mourinho opted to dedicate his side's Community Shield win to the former United boss.

Ibrahimovic, who has won league titles in 14 of 16 seasons, rose above Leicester's Wes Morgan in the 83rd minute at Wembley to head home and add the Community Shield to his collection.

CHRIS WHEELER: As Paul Pogba's move to Manchester United took another step closer to completion, his new teammates ere demonstrating the early progress under Jose Mourinho at Wembley.

Arsenal 3-2 Manchester City: Gabriel injury mars victory as Alex Iwobi, Theo Walcott and

ARSENAL 3-2 MANCHESTER CITY - SAMI MOKBEL IN GOTHENBURG: Theo Walcott changed the course of this match. Is he doing the same with his Arsenal career? In more ways than one he was the hero here in Gothenburg. On the pitch he scored one and made another to help his team come back from a goal down to beat Manchester City in their final pre-season encounter. And then he stole the hearts of the Swedish crowd, posing for a selfie with an infant pitch invader in the closing stages.

Gonzalo Higuain's Juventus debut at West Ham leaves fans questioning the striker's

Chubby Gonzalo Higuain may have been overdoing the celebrations since his big money move to Juventus. The host nation, who have never won Olympic gold, failed to secure three points in Group A for the second consecutive game after an opening-day draw with South Africa. The result leaves Brazil tied for second place and they require a victory over Denmark on Wednesday in Salvador to advance and avoid another huge embarrassment at home, two years after the 7-1 loss to Germany in the World Cup semi-finals.

Novak Djokovic in tears after losing to Juan Martin del Potro at Rio 2016 Olympic Games

World No 1 Novak Djokovic crashed out of the Olympic men's singles in the first round on Sunday, losing in straight sets to Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro. Djokovic, who also lost to Del Potro in the bronze medal play-off in London in 2012, had no answer to the power of the 2009 US Open champion, who sealed a 7-6, 7-6 victory in almost two and a half hours.

Juan Martin del Potro may have swept aside the challenge of Novak Djokovic - but he almost didn't make it to court. The Argentinian found himself stuck in a lift in the Olympic village.

MATT LAWTON IN RIO: How a medal here in Rio would have felt around her neck, awkward or otherwise, Lizzie Armitstead will never know.

PAUL NEWMAN AT EDGBASTON: All it took was one sensational session for England to put the frustrations of four and a half hard-fought days behind them and burst through Pakistan to seal a famous and quite unexpected victory.
Just as an Edgbaston pitch that stubbornly refused to deteriorate seemed destined to have the final word, with this pivotal match fizzling out into a draw, everything changed when England grabbed six wickets between lunch and tea.

DAVID LLOYD AT EDGBASTON: You cannot afford even one bad session in a Test and Pakistan got edgy after lunch. It was triggered by a brilliant spell from Jimmy Anderson.

England could finish the summer on top of the Test rankings if West Indies keep India at bay, and Cook hailed their triumph over the Pakistanis as one of the best during his time in charge.

MAGNUS GERTTEN, CO-DIRECTOR OF BECOMING ZLATAN: I remember the first time I saw Zlatan. It was in the summer of 1999 and I was standing at Malmo's training ground talking to one of the first-team defenders, a rather unsophisticated Swedish player who specialised in kicking the ball into the stands whenever it went near him. He pointed to a young, tall guy standing by himself, kicking the ball. 'That's the new player in the first-team squad. He's the most talented young player I've ever seen. Unfortunately he will not go far. He doesn't have the mental capacity to make it.'
