Malia and Sasha Obama prove their style icon statuses as they embark on a two-week family vacation to Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts.

In photos showing the first family boarding the Air Force One in Maryland, Malia keeps it simple in a stunning white sundress while Sasha mixes it up with a striped top, hi-top sneakers and a very lady-like handbag.

The Obamas have chosen to kick back after the president's star-studded birthday bash last night as Secretary of State John Kerry cheered American athletes on in Rio de Janeiro.

Obama has chosen not to head to Rio for the Summer Olympics, keeping with the tradition of most American presidents. Bush went to the 2008 Opening Ceremony in Beijing, China and met with then-president Hu Jintao

The president has chosen not to head to Rio for the Summer Olympics, which kicked off on Friday amidst fears of Zika, rushed construction, and reports of raw sewage in the water.

He also missed out on the 2012 London games, as well as the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, and Sochi, Russia, respectively.

In 2014 Obama declined to attend the winter games, telling NBC's Bob Constas: 'The folks that people are actually interested in seeing are our incredible athletes.'

Former American presidents have typically stayed behind when the Games were held outside of the United States.

George W. Bush broke with tradition in the final year of his presidency and went to the 2008 Opening Ceremony in Beijing, China.

He turned the trip into a working visit and held talks with China's president at the time, Hu Jintao, and delivered remarks from the new United States Embassy in Beijing in between delegation activities.

A White House official said the prevalence of the Zika virus in Brazil, along with recent reports describing security and sanitation problems in the Latin American American country did not affect Obama's decision to stay in the US

'We have indicated for months that he wasn't going and have said...that Zika wouldn't impact the President's travel plans,' a senior administration official said Wednesday, in response to an inquiry from DailyMail.com.

The trip comes hours after Michelle threw Barack a top secret birthday party after he turned 55 on Thursday.

'Break barriers. Find a different way to resolve the differences between us,' he added.

The first family are planning to stay on their annual summer vacation until August 21, the same day the Olympics are scheduled to end.

Obama has opted not to take the family trip just once in his presidency, in 2012, when he was running for re-election.
