Australian gymnast Larrissa Miller could not hold back the tears after a fall on her final tumble ruined what would have been a perfect routine - all-but ending her Rio Olympics campaign.

Miller, Australia's sole artistic gymnast at the Games, was competing for a spot in the apparatus finals on the uneven bars and floor, and had produced a sublime display up until the final few seconds of her floor routine.

But as she upped her difficulty with a two-and-a-half tuck that would have netted her an extra 0.1 difficulty points, the 24-year-old hit the floor - the error costing her a one point penalty.

She finished with a score of 12.733, well out of calculations for a berth in the eight-person final.

Miller was overcome with emotion in the aftermath.

'Any time something like this happens it's really disappointing, I've been training for four years for this moment,' Miller told AAP.

Miller said 'I really went for it, I guess I can be proud that I went for the full difficulty, even if I didn't get it, I left everything out there'

'I really went for it, I guess I can be proud that I went for the full difficulty, even if I didn't get it, I left everything out there.

'That's why it's so upsetting, I know I have potential to be in finals if I hit the routine - that's the really hard part.'

Miller's score of 14.533 courtesy of a flawless routine on bars left her in fourth place in qualification after the first subdivision, but with four more subdivisions to go in qualifying, she would need a minor miracle to make it through to the final.
