Chaz Bono shows off his slimmer frame as he shops for groceries after shedding more than 85Ib in weight

He admits that gender transition helped him overcome a negative body image and shed more than 85Ibs in weight.

And the fruits of his continued diet and fitness regimen were very much on display as Chaz Bono stepped out in Hollywood on Friday.

The 47-year old son of legendary singer Cher showed off his slimmer frame in a white vest top while shopping for groceries close to his Los Angeles home.

Revealing a pair of muscular tattooed arms, Chaz appeared to be in a subdued mood as he returned to his car following the brief outing.

Loose fitting shorts and high-top trainers completed a very casual look, while a jaunty pork-pie hat rounded things off.

Chaz kept his eyes shielded behind a pair of sunglasses and also revealed a significantly fuller beard as he prepared for the journey home.

The LGBT advocate, author and musician, previously told Extra TV that he cut out 99per cent of grains and dairy from his diet.

'I pretty much eat vegetables, meat, fruit, nuts . . . My birthday is the one day of the year I'll do cake,' he said. 

In a bid to get rid of the excess skin hanging off his body he went under the knife in 2013 - an experience he described as 'not fun, but worth it.'

His 5ft 5in frame previously tipped the scales at 250lbs, putting him in the obese category. 

But now, thanks to adopting a healthier diet, he weighs a lighter 165lbs.

Asked what his famous mother thinks about his transformation, he replied: 'She's pretty darn proud of me.'

Chaz admitted that before he starred on the popular reality show Dancing with the Stars in 2011 he refused to accept that he was overweight.

'I was kind of in denial about how heavy I was, but was ready to do something about it,' he said. 

'I was thinking my weight was holding me back from opportunities in my life, and I was worried about my health.' 

Chaz underwent a female-to-male gender transition between 2008 and 2010. In May 2010, he legally changed his gender and birth name, dropping Chastity.
