And the gold medal goes to... Laurie Hernandez, Aly Raisman and Simone Biles compete for Team USA's best beauty look as the new Fierce Five rule the competition in Rio

  • Team USA led the women's gymnastic qualifying round on Sunday
  • Simone, 19 and Aly, 22, will advance to the all-around finals
  • As we wait for the competition to continue, FEMAIL judges the women's beauty looks and offers product recommendations to steal their style

When beauty editors watch Olympic gymnastics, you better believe our focus is every bit as much on the athletes' eye make-up as it is their tumbling.

Our cheers for Laurie Hernandez's heart-pounding beam routine and Simone Biles' near-perfect vault were interrupted with comments about their hair and make-up.

Does it matter? Not particularly, but seeing as how gymnastics is a performance sport, we couldn't help but dissect every top knot, cat eye and braid we saw.

Here, we award medals for the top beauty looks from Sunday's qualifying rounds.

GOLD MEDAL: Simone Biles, 19

On point! From her head to her toes, Simone Biles, 19, wowed us with her gymnastic and her make-up abilities

Throughout Simone's epic performances, Twitter exploded with fans praising her routines - and her eye make-up.

Maybeitsmaya tweeted, 'SIMONE BILES'S MAKEUP IS SO ON FLEEK AND HER FLIPS ARE SO ON FLEEK AND HER DISMOUNT IS SO ON FLEEK AND IM SUCH A FAN. #RioOlympics2016'

Added @meganmelinda, 'Yes, @Simone_Biles nailed that floor routine, but why are we not talking more about her killing the eye makeup game #Rio2016.'

The Twitter-verse was certainly not wrong. We couldn't stop staring at Simone's glitter-rimmed cat eye either. She opted for a traditional winged liner in black on top, but it was her lower lashline that really stood out. Simone used a sparkly silver liner near the inner corners and used a deep blue shade for the rest. A few coats of mascara completed the look - a perfect score in our book!

We plan on wearing this to our next Olympic viewing party. If you want to do the same, try Nyx Cosmetics Liquid Crystal Liner in Silver ($4.50, nyxcosmetics.com) and MAC Pearlglide Intense Eyeliner in Petrol Blue ($17, maccosmetics.com).

SILVER MEDAL: Laurie Hernandez, 16

Split decision: Despite a killer performance on the beam (seen here) Laurie Hernandez, 16, will not advance to the all-around finals. Her make-up, however, is another story

Best in show: Laurie paired her bouncy curls with groomed brows and a rose-gold cat-eye

Put 'em up if you like this look: Try a black, liquid eyeliner and a shadow palette with several shades of shimmery rose gold for a similar effect

An ab injury may have kept Laurie from earning a spot to compete in the all-around competition, but it won't stop her from medaling here.

Her gorgeous curls gave her an edge to start, but her make-up application skills rival any YouTube beauty guru around. Just look at that eyeshadow!

Laurie's beautiful eyes are captivating on their own, but tightly lined in black and played up with soft rose-gold shadow makes them even more mesmerizing. For a similar look, try the Urban Decay Naked3 Palette ($54, nordstrom.com) and L’Oréal Paris Infallible Sculpt Liner ($9, lorealparisusa.com).

BRONZE MEDAL: Aly Raisman, 22

Aly is the ultimate beauty girl. She usually wows us with her interesting placement of blue eyeliner and often posts photos on Instagram of her make-up and skincare routine and products.

Last night, the second-time Olympian, and team captain, went for a less-is-more look, captioning a photo on Instagram, 'natural make-up for prelims yesterday and lots of hairspray'.

While we appreciate showing restraint in make-up, especially when wearing a crystal-encrusted leotard, we were hoping for more than a slicked-back top knot and no-make-up make-up from the veteran gymnast. Fingers crossed she brings it for the all-around competition.

We'll give her one thing, though: Her use of highlighter was impeccable. For similar strobing, try one of her go-tos, Laura Mercier Face Illuminator ($44, lauramercier.com).
