Late to the party! Thor star Tom Hiddleston posts his very first Instagram... but his girlfriend Taylor Swift did not make the cut

His other half Taylor Swift is one of the most influential celebrities on social media - boasting a staggering 88 million followers on Instagram.

And it seems as though Tom Hiddleston wants a piece of the action, as he posted his very first Instagram snap on Tuesday.

The British actor shared a picture of himself in character as Loki from the set of the new Thor: Ragnarok movie, being film in Australia's Gold Coast.

Wearing his dark long-haired wig and costume, he flashed a 'rock-on' hand sign in the picture which he captioned: 'He's back!'

No doubt his social media savvy girlfriend Taylor will be a little disappointed she did not make the cut for his first post.

The pair were extremely open about the early stages of their whirlwind romance and shared a number of snaps from Taylor's star-studded Fourth of July celebrations.

But the Shake It Off singer has been noticeably absent from Instagram in the past few days following her feud with Kanye West over his controversial 'Famous' lyrics.

Tom's first post attracted over 28,000 likes in the first two hours, a drop in the ocean compared to Taylor's updates which rake in millions of likes on average.

The Night Manager actor, 35, has so far accumulated 156,000 followers - a number that is sure to rise.

Speaking of his character's return to the franchise in June, Tom said at Wizard World in Philadelphia: 'I’m so excited about playing him again,'

'The most exciting thing about him is that he is always a trickster,' he noted, adding: 'It is trying to find new ways for him to be mischievous, because I love doing that'.

Tom is currently filming Thor: Ragnarok, due for release in 2017, alongside Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo in Australia.

He enjoyed a few days holiday in the Gold Coast with Taylor last month before starting to shoot scenes.

The pop star jetted back to the U.S. last week and she was seen partying with Nelly at oil heir Mike Hess' birthday party in the Hamptons over the weekend.

She was even seen planting a kiss on the birthday boy's cheek as she joined in on Nelly's hit song Dilemma.
