Some of the players clasped their hands together and took in the moment, while other shared a few words with Princess Anne before she moved on.

The British team remained standing for the ceremony and shook hands with Princess Anne as she gifted them their silver.

Clapping three times is traditionally performed during a Fijian Kava ceremony, signifying the bringing together of two families.

After drinking the Kava root drink it is customary to clap three times and say 'Mathe'.

Fiji captain Osea Kolinisau led the defending Sevens World Series champions as they won the first Olympic rugby competition in 92 years.

He got the first of five first-half tries, two converted, for a 29-0 lead that a leaden-footed Britain never looked like matching.

'I'm a little bit lost for words. The boys were on another scale of phenomenal,' Fiji's English coach Ben Ryan said.

'They were just stratospheric and they saved the best until last.

'They played some high-risk rugby there and they were outstanding and, hopefully, we showcased Fijian rugby and everybody who was watching, maybe even the British supporters, can have a smile.

'It's always been our plan for three years, get them back to number one, win world titles and then claim this first gold medal.'

The Pacific islanders starved the British of the ball, competing successfully at every re-start and refusing to panic on the few occasions they threatened.

'That was probably one game too far for us,' said Britain's James Rodwell.

'Credit to Fiji. They have played an absolute blinder in that final. Untouchable really in certain aspects of the game.'

It was certainly the perfect publicity for World Rugby as they seek a permanent place for rugby sevens on the Olympic programme, the 15-a-side format having last featured in 1924.

WHY DID THE FIJIAN RUGBY PLAYERS CLAP THREE TIMES DURING THE CEREMONY?

Clapping three times is traditionally performed during a Fijian Kava ceremony, signifying the bringing together of two families.

After drinking the Kava root drink it is customary to clap three times and say ‘Mathe’.

Kava is made from the root of the yaqona bush and mixed with water to make a traditional drink. It is an essential part of Fijian culture.

Although not alcoholic, Kava does have a mild anaesthetic effect.

Clapping three times after drinking the Kava is a way of showing respect and admiration.

The bronze medal match also proved to be one too many for Japan as South Africa crushed them 54-14.

Fiji has sent athletes to the Olympics ever since the Melbourne Games in 1956, but had never previously won a medal.

The sevens team took that honor when it beat tournament upstart Japan 20-5 in the semifinals, but all the players and coach Ben Ryan knew that silver would not satisfy the Fijian public.

Ryan said it time and again — only gold would do for the expectant public in their Pacific island country of 900,000.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FIJI AND THE UNITED KINGDOM

The first Europeans to land and live among the Fijians were shipwrecked sailors and runaway convicts from the Australian penal settlements.

Sandalwood traders and missionaries came by the mid 19th century, and quickly gained influence.

From 1879 to 1916 Indians came as indentured labourers to work on the sugar plantations. After the indentured system was abolished, many stayed on as independent farmers and businessmen. Today they comprise 43.6 per cent of the population.

The 20th century brought about important economic changes in Fiji as well as the maturation of its political system. Fiji developed a major sugar industry and established productive copra milling, tourism and secondary industries. It remained a British colony until 1970.

As the country now diversifies into small-scale industries, the economy is strengthened and revenues provide for expanded public works, infrastructure, health, medical services and education.

The country’s central position in the region has been strengthened by recent developments in sea and air communications and transport. Today, Fiji plays a major role in regional affairs and is recognized as the focal point of the South Pacific.
