BORO 1-1 STOKE - CRAIG HOPE AT THE RIVERSIDE: Alvaro Negredo got his personal Premier League return off to a perfect start but Middlesbrough were denied their own 100 per cent start by Stoke in a 1-1 draw at the Riverside. Negredo matched the feat from his first Manchester City appearance as he scored with his first effort on target for his new club. The Spaniard rose highest to put Boro ahead after just 11 minutes of their opening day. Xherdan Shaqiri's second-half free-kick ensured that the Riverside fans did not get to see their side secure all three points but Boro showed themselves to be up for the challenge of the Premier League.

ADAM SHERGOLD AT SELHURST PARK: Salomon Rondon's second-half header was enough to secure West Brom three points against Crystal Palace on the opening day.

The International Football Association Board gave permission for their VAR (Video Assistant Referee) system to be trialled in the USL, America's second division, with a view for it to be permanently installed across the world for the 2018-19 season. After FIFA announced the use of goalline technology in 2013, VAR is set to be the next aid for referees coming into the game as human error looks to be minimised.
