In the first half of the year, some 174,700 homeowners moved house - a 9 per cent increase compared with last year and the highest level since 2008. Andrew Mason, Lloyds Bank mortgage product director, said higher house prices have boosted the amount of cash home movers have in their property, which in turn has helped towards the purchase of the next home.
Four great holiday rip-offs: How stealth tax rises, currency con tricks, car hire extras and credit card swindles are making foreign trips unaffordable for British families
Families are being hammered with a £250 holiday tax - plus a triple whammy of stealth fees. Taking a family of four to Spain means handing the taxman £133.20 - 30 per cent up on 2008. Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon is set halve air passenger duty between 2018 and 2021 in a bid to boost business. Tory MPs are privately putting pressure on Philip Hammond, the new Chancellor, to cut VAT in the autumn statement to provide a post-referendum shot-in-the arm to the economy. Last night, they went public with calls for air passenger duty to be cut.

MARKET REPORT: Animal genetics firm Genus sinks 8% after losing US patent bust-up over bull semen
The technology involved can skew which gender is produced from artificial insemination, which is important because dairy farmers prefer female calves. Genus launched its product as an alternative to technology already in use by Inguran, hoping to increase competition in the market. But yesterday a US district court in Wisconsin ruled that Inguran's patent was valid and had been infringed.

MONEY NEWS & ADVICE
I want my pension freedom! Why am I trapped in a £51k fund I can't bequeath to my children and grandchildren?
I have a pension pot worth £51,000 and want to use new pension freedoms to bequeath it to my children and grandchildren. I thought that the changes to the pension rules were designed to increase flexibility and would mean that I could transfer the pension into a drawdown policy to spend, invest or save as I choose. Instead I am stuck in a pension scheme that will end upon the second death of either me or my wife.
Holiday home haven: As the falling pound bumps up the price of foreign hotels... RAY MASSEY tests a four-wheeled alternative
The compact two-berth Bailey Approach Compact motorhome is based around the popular Peugeot Boxer van cab, engine and low-slung chassis. It costs £38,000 or you can rent one for short term for holidays. Mine had almost everything - including kitchen sink, cooker, compact bathroom with loo, washbasin and refreshing shower.
The pound's weakness is here to stay but is it a blessing or a curse? What sterling's slump means for the UK's economy, businesses and households
Traditionally a fall in the pound has been associated with economic hardship - think 'Black Wednesday' when the UK crashed out of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism, straight after the dot-com bubble burst in 2001, or during the financial crisis of 2008. But this time around, the Government has been telling investors and businesses that this is an opportunity - a once in a generation chance to turn an unbalanced economy reliant on consumer demand and imports back into a trading force.
Help! Scottish Power is threatening me with penalty charges because British Gas failed to give it my new readings
We moved house in April this year, inheriting our energy supply from Scottish Power. I gave it our opening reading but then switched to British Gas straight away as I found a much better tariff and was told this had happened at the end of April. A final bill from Scottish Power arrived in May for £167.51 which I queried as it seemed excessive for just 18 days of energy. I was told the bill had been created by using estimated readings so I again gave the correct reading and was told to call British Gas with these.
The 11 best new motorbikes of 2016: Expert panel tells you which motorcycle you should buy next
Whether you're looking to commute in the city, enjoy globe-trotting adventures offroad, or graze a kneeslider at a trackday, one of these 11 motorcycles will be right for you, according to the review team at Auto Trader. The selection has been made as part of its Best Bike Awards for 2016. But don't think it all comes down to outright speed - the overall winner is about as far from a superbike as you can get.
Watch out for pension deadlines: Prepare for the 55, 65 and 75 age milestones to make retirement comfortable
Pension age deadlines are far more fluid nowadays as older people have gained greater control over when they retire and how they run their finances in old age. But the traditional age milestones of 55, 65 and 75 are still important markers that call for informed decisions - even if it is just to postpone doing anything while still in the earlier stages.
Maverick investing star Terry Smith attracts £1bn from savers in 3 months to his Buffet-style Fundsmith fund
The outspoken City veteran, famous for ruffling the feathers of employers and some of the biggest names in investment, saw the performance of his fund soar while rivals suffered. For the first time in 30 years the industry suffered two consecutive quarters of net outflows. Latest figures from The Investor Association showed savers pulled £3.5billion out of funds in June.

The daft family home inheritance tax break shows why we need a new test for simple taxes, says SIMON LAMBERT
George Osborne introduced some overly-complex gems, but perhaps his most needlessly complicated tax change was the one to inheritance tax. What we need now is a new Office of Budget Simplicity. All future tax changes need to be put before it and its panel of reasonable ordinary people, who must understand them with very little explanation.
REBECCA RUTT: I've had it with PPI callers and if a deadline's imposed they'll only get worse - so what's the best way to get rid of them?
We've all had the phone calls, 'Hello X, we're calling to say you're due thousands in compensation for the PPI you were mis-sold'. Normally I just tell the caller not to contact me again or by hanging up the phone. But last week I had a particularly nasty and threatening caller who insisted I should be using that company to check for my mis-sold payment protection insurance. Despite the fact I told the caller instantly I didn't have it, wasn't interested and wanted my number to be taken off the list, I was then bombarded with accusations about me not wanting the refund I was 'owed'.
The gloomy investor who is one of the few to do BETTER thanks to Brexit fears, we get Murray International manager Bruce Stout's best ideas
Many investment trusts are still reeling from the shock of Brexit, but not Murray International. The trust's style was out of favour last year but it has bounced back, with its low exposure to the UK proving a boost. Manager Bruce Stout is skeptical of Western central bankers and says he can find better opportunities in emerging markets.
Is there a housing crisis and how do people manage to afford London homes? Watch the Property Show
Declining ownership is seen as another sign of property market in crisis, but is this true? Ed Mead, of estate agents Douglas and Gordon, joins the Property Show, to look at the state of the market and whether prices will keep rising. And as an experienced agent he also answers the question many of us will have asked: 'How on earth do people afford London homes?'
How can you make money without gambling your nest egg away? From current accounts to property, gold, shares and even wine and classic cars... we size up the risks
When the Bank of England cut interest rates, it wanted to encourage investors to take 'more risk' with their money. The higher the risk, the bigger the potential returns . . . but so will your losses be if things go wrong. Here, we guide you through the best ways to beat the rate cuts and keep your returns safely trickling in... and most importantly explain just how risky they are.
Brexit bonanza for property hunters: One in three homes for sale had its asking price slashed after EU vote
More than 30% of homes for sale on the property website Zoopla had been reduced in price by the beginning of August, with the average discount at £25,257. The North of England has borne the brunt of the price cuts, with more than two fifths of properties listed in Huddersfield, Wigan and St Helens having been marked down.
Why a fix is best for mortgages: Trackers may look tempting after the rate cut but you could end up paying more
Many homeowners are bombarding mortgage brokers with phone calls asking if they should switch to a deal that tracks official interest rates. With the Bank of England indicating rates could fall again, borrowers question whether they should choose this type of deal instead of a fixed rate - but a fix is probably still better.
As lenders sharpen their knives after last week's rate cut... Where to find best accounts before they go
Early indications are that lenders have no intention of cushioning savers and are set to pass on as much as possible of the 0.25 per cent cut in Bank of England base rate announced last week. Some have already cut top easy-access accounts for new savers, while the best fixed-rate bonds are fast disappearing.
Number of investment trusts yielding 4% or more falls by a quarter as share prices rise in Brexit Britain
The strong performance of investment trusts' share prices post-Brexit has led to a fall in the proportionate level of income they can pay out.Between May and August, the number of trusts paying a dividend yield of more than 4 per cent fell from 19 to 14 - while at the start of the year there were 21.
What is the Bank of England base rate and why does is matter? Get an explanation in the Big Money Questions
On the latest episode of the Big Money Questions show, we take a step back and ask, what actually is the base rate and what has it got to do with our household finances? Fund manager, economist and author of Money Eric Lonergan gives a one minute explainer, followed by a more detailed version and then talks to presenter Rachel Rickard Straus about why the rate is so low - rounded off with an explanation of the mysterious world of central banks through the simple analogy of a babysitting circle.

It is time the Government and the insurance industry took radical steps to help residents of rural and urban communities reclaim their neighbourhoods from the lorries, the lunatics - and those Great British Motorists who like toddlers think they can do what they like, and explode with rage and indignation when questioned about it.
