Horrific punishments dreamt up by the Tsars who sent millions to Siberia

Today, the name of that immense region - one-and-a-half times larger than the entire continent of Europe - evokes the horrors of Stalin's Gulag (former ruler pictured inset), the network of forced labour camps that were largely concentrated there. But it was used as a penal colony long before the Soviet era, and the brutal and dehumanising conditions imposed there under the Tsars led Dostoevsky to describe his four years in a Siberian prison camp (executioner, left) as like being in 'a world all of its own . . . a house of the living dead'. The 'crime' of Dostoevsky and the other men whose lives were spared that day was to have called for social reform in Russia. A wildlife park is celebrating the arrival of the first ever lion triplets to be born since it opened 46 years ago. The proud parents, rare Asiatic lions Rana and Kanha (pictured inset), have made history with their very first litter at Cotswold Wildlife Park, near Burford, Oxfordshire. On Saturday, the adorable trio of cubs, Kali, Sita and Sonika, are pictured (main) making their public debut and meeting their father for the first time.
