Ear's to another year of bonding: Cool mum Madonna takes son Rocco to get a '$135 piercing on his 16th birthday'

Their relationship has been rocky over the past year - with Rocco reportedly growing tired of his mother's strict parenting. 

But Madonna's eldest son seemed over the moon with his mum as she allowed him to get his ears pierced the day after his 16th birthday, this week.

The Express Yourself hitmaker, 57, was seen taking her son to Elite Jewelry & Piercing in Manhattan on Friday, where he reportedly walked out with a shiny new stud in his ear.

TMZ reports that the teenager chose a gold square stud costing $120 for the earring, whilst the piercing totalled $15.

The outing was allegedly a brief one, with the site reporting the pair spent roughly half an hour inside before heading back out for the day.  

It came after Madonna posted a sweet message to her son to celebrate his birthday. 

She posted two heartfelt uploads on Twitter - the first of which showing him visiting his adoptive brother David's homeland of Africa, last month.

She wrote: 'Happy Birthday to my First Born Son! A true Warrior with a beautiful Heart. Let the Sun shine!' 

In another throwback snap, which showed herself carrying a young Rocco in her arms, she wrote: 'Once my baby always my baby. Happy Sweet 16!'

In a final snap, she gushed: 'Happy Birthday Wild Child! Time waits for no one!!'

Rocco's stepmum Jacqui Ritchie also got in on the action, sharing a cute photo of the pair enjoying a boat trip, captioned simply: 'Happy 16'.

Rocco's father Guy - to whom Madonna was previously married for eight years - remarried English model Jacqui in 2015.

She has taken on step-motherly duties with earnest, providing Rocco with three other step-brothers and sisters through her marriage to Guy.

While she shared an adoring snap to celebrate her step-son's birthday, the group also lived it up in Iceland by visiting the Thrihnukagigur volcano. 

Enjoying the spiritual trip, the group delved into the dormant volcano after Jacqui and Guy gave Rocco a touching present for his birthday. 

As source told Mirror: 'Guy and Jacqui had a Kabbalah wedding and they wanted something based on belief and spirituality for Rocco’s present.

'It’s a silver and gold protection bracelet with his star sign birth stones, moonstone and topaz.'
