On Thursday she became the first African American woman to medal in an individual swimming event.

And on Saturday Simone Manuel added two more medals to her trophy case, bringing home the silver in the Women's 50m freestyle and the gold in the Women’s 4x100 medley relay.

Manuel had to jump back in the pool less than an hour after her silver medal race, and still managed to anchor Team USA to a golden finish.

The United States is the first nation to reach the number, nabbing its first gold in 1896. No other nation comes close.

Manuel has already won silver in Rio as part of Team USA in the Women's 4x100m freestyle relay.

But it was her gold medal swim during the Women's 100m freestyle on Thursday that has already made Manuel a household name - and an inspiration.

The 20-year-old, who broke down in tears after her victorious swim, also was the first woman to win the event for the United States since 1984.

'This medal is not just for me, it's for a whole bunch of people who have come before me and have been an inspiration to me,' Manuel said.

'And it's for all the people after me who believe you can't do it,' she added. 'I just want to be an inspiration to others that you can do it.'

Manuel said that while she was proud to become the first American black woman to medal in an individual swimming event, she hoped to get to a stage when race was no longer even an issue in the sport.

Team USA remained dominant on Saturday night, continuing to find its way on the top two spots of the podium stand.

Connor Jaeger also added another silver to Team USA's mantle, taking the second spot in the Men's 1500m freestyle with a time of 14 minutes and 39 seconds.

Jaeger shared the podium with two Italians. Gregorio Paltrinieri, who clocked in five seconds sooner, grabbed gold while his teammate Gabriele Detti scored bronze.

It was only fitting that Michael Phelps' final race closed out the night, and unsurprisingly it was a golden one.

But victory didn't come easy for Team USA in the Men's 4x100 medley relay.

Ryan Murphy gave Team USA an incredible lead at the start of the race as he set a world record with his backstroke.

Great Britain pulled ahead as Cody Miller began the breaststroke in the second lap, and the United States was soon trailing by a nail-biting half a second.

But then Phelps was back in the water for the butterfly, and soon USA and Britain were neck and neck as he nabbed America the number one spot yet again.

Nathan Adrian then gave the swim of his life as the team's anchor, holding on to Phelps' lead and pulling ahead in the last 50 meters, fighting to make sure Phelps' final race would be a golden one.

Phelps was visibly emotional at the end of the race, and his fiancee Nicole Johnson and mother Debbie Phelps were bawling with tears of joy as they touched heads, Phelps' son Boomer between them.

Tears brimmed in the superstar's eyes as the Star-Spangled Banner rang out to bring the curtain down on his masterful career.

Phelps then slowly made his way around around the arena to where his family were waiting to hand him down a giant American flag.

He draped it around his teammates' shoulders as they posed proudly with their medals, lapping up the historic moment.

Phelps eyes were dry until the moment he heard the Star-Spangled Banner play for him one final time

The sight was no doubt especially emotional for Debbie, who has been a fixture on the stands for every one of Phelps' games in his 16-year Olympic career

Murphy, Miller, Phelps and Adrian smile with their gold medals, finishing an incredible run for Team USA in the pool

Recalling his emotional final day of Olympic swimming, Phelps said: 'Getting off the bus walking into the pool tonight, I almost felt myself starting to cry.'

'Last warm-up, last time putting on a suit, last time walking out in front of thousands of people representing my country. It's insane.'

'A lot better than what it was four years ago. This is how I wanted to finish my career, the way I wanted to. I held back a little bit on the podium but there were some that were popping down.'

Phelps added: 'It just feels good to know that the hard work did pay off and I was able to fight through some of the times that I went through the last two years and get back to where I actually wanted to be.

'This was the actual cherry on top of the cake and I'm looking forward to starting a new chapter.'
