Former New York congressman Anthony Weiner has allegedly been caught out in a flirty exchange with a man who 'catfished' him.

Weiner, who was forced to resign from office in 2011 after it emerged he has sent explicit pictures to 'about six women' on social media, was lured into a conversation on Twitter with a user who falsely claimed they were a young woman named Nikki.

In the chat, which was obtained by the New York Post, Weiner refers to himself as a 'mongoose' and joked about stripping naked in his hotel room.

The 51-year-old, who is married to top Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, fell into the trap during a visit to film HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher in Los Angeles.

After a series of innocent comments about California weather, surfing, and traffic, the conversation took on a more suggestive tone after the person told Weiner they find high heels uncomfortable.

'The daily conflict between comfort and attractive goes on for Nikki... on behalf of the men and women of LA, I think you,' he wrote.

Weiner they said he was deceptively strong 'like a mongoose', before saying he hoped to have the chance to 'impress' 'Nikki'.

After saying the person was making him 'imagine stuff', the former congressman joked about breaking the television in his hotel room.

'Funny scene here. I moved the tv so I could hear/see it while in the shower. I dropped it. Neighbor complained. Me Towel. Tv. Floor. And now concierge on the way,' he wrote, according to the New York Post.

'Nikki' then replied: 'come out with just a towel on when he/she knocks, would pretty much = a tip for the concierge.' 

Weiner messaged back: 'this is definitely a porn set up.'

He then gave out his phone number to the person, before the conversation came to a halt.  

The person who tricked Weiner used the Twitter account of a female friend to get in touch with the former politician, the New York Post claims.

However, Weiner says he knew it was a trick all along, and he enjoyed the 'playful joust with an obvious catfish'.

He did tell the New York Post it is true that he is deceptively strong like a mongoose. 

In additional to Weiner's 2011 sexting scandal, he also saw his 2013 comeback attempt ruined by another explicit image controversy.

During his run for New York City mayor, adult film star Sydney Leathers revealed Weiner had sent her a nude picture of himself in late 2012.

His campaign struggled from that point on, and he finished with just five per cent of the vote.

He has since become a political pundit, writer and podcaster.
