New Lethal Weapon series to be promoted with 3D projection video of car crashing out of Times Square building and falling into the street

  • Video shows the car crashing through the side of the high-rise
  • It then appears to fall before the building is revealed to be a projection
  • The series remake will star Damon Wayans Sr and Clayne Crawford
  • Both appear in the video, looking down at where the car disappeared
  • Fox wanted to promote the show in a 'distinctive and breakthrough' way

The series remake of Lethal Weapon isn't premiering for another month, but Fox is already thinking of creative ways to make it stand out in the Fall television crowd.

The network has created a 3D video installation that will make it seem as if a car is crashing through the side of a high-rise building in Times Square.

In the video the falling car appears to be heading right for the busy street below, before it reveals the building is actually a projection screen.

Damon Wayans Sr and Clayne Crawford, stars of the remake, then appear on the screen, looking down at where the car disappeared before walking away.

Angela Courtin, the Fox broadcasting chief marketing officer, said the video is inspired by the show's pilot, which will premiere on September 21.

The pilot will show Wayans Sr and Crawford, playing the roles made famous by Danny Glover and Mel Gibson, partnering up for a high-speed car chase.

Courtin said the network wanted to promote the new series in a way that would make it standout from the crowded slate of pilots dropping next month.

'You want to have something that's distinctive and breakthrough,' she told the Hollywood Reporter

'And we've clearly, literally, created that breakthrough moment.'

Courtin said the network also tried to ensure that the stunt would not remind New Yorkers of a very real image that many witnessed 15 years ago.

'It's not an explosion where it might be evocative of a certain type of tragedy,' she said.

The 3D projection will play on a loop and different versions have been created to play in the day and nighttime hours.

'Our hope is that people do wonder what it is and want to stay and see it in the next rotation,' Courtin said.

'If people stop in their tracks, we've done our job.'
