Having attended a slew of Rio events, Matthew McConaughey is making something of a name for himself as Team USA's biggest and most famous Olympic superfan.

And Thursday night was no different for the Dallas Buyers Club star as he and wife Camila Alves headed to the Aquatic Centre to cheer on U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps as he won his 22nd gold medal in the 200 metre medley.

The glamorous pair shouted themselves hoarse before sharing a celebratory smooch after the American record breaker's latest triumph.

Ryan Lochte was cheered on by his new Playboy model girlfriend Kayla Rae Reid, who was spotted in the stands sporting Lochte-themed glasses before watching him race.

She looked glum as Lochte, who came in fifth, failed to medal in the event for the first time since his Olympic career began, winning silver in Athens and London and scoring a bronze in Beijing.

Reid, 25, has been linked to the handsome Olympian since March and the pair have made little secret of their romance on social media.

In an exclusive interview with Daily Mail Online she revealed the star had talked about retiring but was still on the fence about his participation in Tokyo four years from now.

'He's mentioned this might be his last one but then sometimes he says he thinks he will go again,' she said.

Matthew and Camila, who were without children Levi, eight, Vida, six, and three-year-old Livingston for their Olympic jaunt, perfectly blended into the enthusiastic crowd.

Matthew proudly stood to watch Phelps receive his latest gold medal, placing his hand on his heart as the U.S. national anthem rang out.

The 46-year-old star looked casual in a pale sweater, grey newsboy cap, and khaki trousers.

And although he wasn't dressed in the red, white and blue he has been wearing at other venues, he still opted to show a little Olympic spirit by decorating his identification lanyard with numerous Olympic-themed pins.

His Brazilian-born wife meanwhile, looked a little more colourful in a floral blazer over a white top and dark blue jeans.

The 34-year-old at times, looked a little distracted, playing with her phone in between smooches with her husband.

Her long, wavy brunette locks were pushed over to her right side, while she kept her make-up to a minimum, save for a dab of pale rose lipstick.

The actor even took the chance to meet the record-breaking Olympian, posing with Phelps after the race for an Instagram snap.

After witnessing Phelps' record 22nd medal win, the couple decided to keep things casual as they went for a romantic dinner date.

However, the relaxed pair were happy to meet and greet fans on their night out, posing for a few pictures in the street.

Matthew recently opened up about his excitement for the Olympic games.

'It's the first time I've been to the Olympics, actually,' the True Detective actor told CBC

Acknowledging that his wife was born in the host country, he said: 'We're always looking for a reason to be here and this gave us a really good reason.'

He was also full of praise for his Olympic experience so far, saying: 'I think Rio and Brazil's doing a good job of hosting.'

Phelps kept Lochte off the top of the podium for the last time Thursday, scoring first in the 200m individual medley and nabbing his 22nd Olympic gold medal.

The most decorated Olympian of all time surged ahead of his competitors in the final lap, and made the number four with his fingers as he celebrated with a roaring Rio crowd that has not tired of seeing him win.

Phelps has not lost the event since his Olympic debut in the 2004 Athens games, making it his fourth straight win.

The race began with a huge roar from the massive Team USA contingent who applauded wildly and broke into chants of USA.

Lochte, who has struggled with a groin injury in recent weeks, was ahead at the half-stage but he quickly tired and Japan's Kosuke Hagino took silver and Wang Shun of China grabbed bronze.

The race was billed as the closing chapter of a superstar rivalry that has lit up successive Games since 2004.

Three times Lochte has come up against Phelps in the final of the men's 200 individual medley and three times he has lost out to his illustrious teammate.

With Phelps set to retire after Rio 2016, the pair will never meet again on this stage and he was understated in his celebrations and quick to embrace Lochte, who pulled off his swim cap in disappointment.

Ever the sportsman, Lochte congratulated his teammate in the pool before Phelps took his victory lap.

The Olympian couldn't hold back tears as he took his place on the top spot of the podium once again.

He said afterwards it was still a dream to win gold, even if he has repeated the feat 22 times.

'I say this a lot, but every single day I'm living a dream come true, he explained. 'As a kid I wanted to do something that no one had ever done before and I'm enjoying it.

'Being able to finish how I won is just something very special to me and this is why you are seeing more and more emotion on the medal podium.

'You know as a kid, it's not like pulling teeth to get me in the pool anymore. I want to finish my career how I want to, so that's what I'm doing.'

Paying tribute to his family, he said: 'Every single time I come out I try to look up and see Nicole, my mom, Boomer and the rest of my family.

'It brings tears to my eyes because I want to hold him and hang out with him more.'

Lochte, meanwhile, spoke of his disappointment at coming fifth in what will possibly be his final Olympic race.

'I wish that end was a lot better. It is what it is,' he said. 'My swimming career has been good and I'm so thankful for the gifts and talent that I've been given.

'But I had to work at it. Day in and day out for so many years, I just wish it ended up better.'

Lochte refused to say whether he would retire but said he needed a 'mental break' from the sport.

'I can't say this is over,' he added. 'If anything, I think especially that race, it helped motivate me.'

'There are a lot of things I need to change in the next four years if I want to come back into the sport. But for right now I think I need a break mentally. Who knows. It could be for a day, it could be ten days, two years.

'I just know I need physical and mental tapering.'

Lochte also paid a glowing tribute to his close friend and erstwhile rival Phelps, saying he was not convinced he would follow through on plans to retire.

'Going against him is a dream come true,' he said. 'Especially what he has done in the sport. He has changed it.

'He's one of the best, not swimmer ever, best athlete in the Olympics. For me, being able to push him for so many years, we bring the best out of each other.

'He said that's it. I think I said it in the call room today that I'm not going to believe it until I see it, so we will see what happens.'

The most decorated Olympian of all time already looked set for victory in the race as he sailed through the semifinal on Wednesday night.

Lochte, a 12-time medalist, was close behind Phelps and seemed to have at least a silver medal in the bag in his only individual race in Rio.

'I love racing him. I think, for me, he brings out the best in me,' Phelps said of his friendly longtime rival after the race.

Lochte agreed, adding: 'We bring out the best in each other. Any time I get up and race him, it's the best.'

The pair won gold together just days ago in the Men's 4x200m freestyle relay.

And Phelps and Lochte were clearly feeling nostalgic as their final Olympic race together neared.

Lochte tweeted a picture that showed the two eating pasta dinners side-by-side before their race on Thursday night.

Phelps only has one more event in Rio, and quickly had to jump off the podium and back into the pool to race in the Men's 100m butterfly semifinal.

He cruised by with a comfortable second in his heat and qualified for the final tomorrow, where he will once again face off against South Africa's Chad le Clos.

Boomer Phelps, as well as the swimmer's fiancee Nicole Johnson and his mother Deborah, were spotted once again in the stands waiting to cheer him on.

Phelps' adorable baby son has been the only person able to steal the spotlight from the unstoppable swimmer, who has now racked up four gold medals in Rio.

After the medal ceremony for the 200m butterfly earlier this week, Phelps broke ranks during the customary walk around the pool and bounded into the stands to plant a tender kiss on Boomer.

'I wanted to be with him more,' he added. 'Being able to share that one moment that I had with him was definitely something very special.'

Although it wasn't Lochte's best swim in the pool, it was a golden run for Team USA after an unusually disappointing spread of performances the night before.

Simone Manuel grabbed gold in the Women's 100m freestyle, making her the first African American woman to medal in an individual event.
