Physical Medals and Cash Awards

Three of the medals that the IMU presents to the awardees are made of 14 KT gold, the Chern Medal is minted of 18 KT gold. The monetary value of all medals heavily depends on the gold price of the day of minting. A "generic price" of one medal is about 5,000 Euro/Dollar. Below are more details about the medals that the awardees receive and the cash values of the prizes.

Fields Medal

The name of the prize winner is engraved on the rim.

The name of the prize winner is engraved on the rim.

The cash value of the Chern Medal Award: The Medalist receives a cash prize of US$ 250,000. In addition, each Medalist may nominate one or more organizations to receive funding totaling US$ 250,000 for the support of research, education, or other outreach programs in the field of mathematics (the "Organization Awards").

There are no former winners. The Chern Medal Award is given for the first time in 2010.
