Rio Olympics: Boomers keep Australia's medal hopes alive after disappointing Games

Australia's basketballers (Patty Mills pictured centre) have toppled Lithuania in the quarterfinals in Rio to keep the country's remaining medal hopes alive after a disappointing - and very expensive - Games. Each medal Australia has won at the Rio Olympics has cost the taxpayer $16million after the proud sporting nation's disastrous performance at the Games. Australia is on track to collect the country's lowest tally since the 1988 Games in Seoul, with just 24 medals so far in Rio. The record low medal haul comes after the government spent $377million of taxpayer money on elite sports since the London Olympics in 2012. It has been left to previously unheralded athletes like swimmer Mack Horton to win individual gold while his more illustrious team-mates have failed.
