The significance of the title, Confessions of a Transsexual Physician, was not lost on this reviewer, as the author, Dr. Jessica Birch, a former practicing Catholic, pulls no punches in terms of the intimate revelations expressed in this extremely frank memoir. "Confessions" provides an often sad and gut-wrenching glimpse into the life of an individual who happens to be a physician who is also an MTF transsexual, taking us on a journey through childhood, early adulthood, marriage and family, gender transition and beyond.

In so doing, this memoir provides a very up-front and self-critical case study of a person who has a history of making impulsive, sometimes narcissistic, co-dependent, oft obsessive and/or self-destructive decisions. However, it is a touching book that is ultimately about a human being who originally viewed herself as a victim, not accepting much responsibility for her actions, but has finally come to terms with her life. She has done so after moving on to her new gender role and repairing and improving those relationships she could salvage while building fresh and strong friendships with others who are now in her circle while developing brand new interests and outlooks.

The writer, a person who experienced intense gender dysphoric feelings from her earliest memories, relates an honest and gripping account of her difficult journey across gender roles, pulling no punches in her account of the struggles toward self-acceptance as she moves us through her transition. Most importantly, her story makes a powerful case for the "normalization" of transgender issues.

A a physician, who is also a transsexual, I enjoyed reading this book. Many parts of the author's journey and her life resonated deeply with me. I found her descriptions of incidents, the whole transition process, and her life before and after transition to be similar to mine. She well describes how gender identity dysphoria affects us, those who are our family and friends and children, and the devastation that we face. She also shares the beauty that is our life after we finally get the proper treatment, and are allowed to live our lives as the people we've always known ourselves to be. Well done, doctor!

As a hypnotist who works with individuals with gender identity issues.....in the same city as the author......I found the book so fascinating I read it in one sitting.

Thank you Dr. Birch for putting yourself out there into the world so that people like me can better understand those we are attempting to help guide through the emotional land mines in front of them.

You deserve all the happiness and joy life has to offer.

who sees this doctor. I really appreciate the clear writing and the honesty the writer displays in discussing some of the really difficult parts of being transgendered, especially pre-transition. She is clear that her behavior was sometimes out of control and inappropriate, although I'm not sure she understands why or what happened between her and a beloved therapist. As a therapist, I understand what probably happened, and I am deeply sympathetic for both her and the therapist. However, in general it's a powerful and positive story about how to deal with a fundamentally upsetting question of identity. People may not understand what being transgendered means, but it's not "girls who think they're boys" or "boys who want to be girls". And for some people, it's so difficult and painful that the available alternatives are to change the body to match the mind, or die. I'm really glad this caring, talented doctor was able and willing to do what she needed to do to live with herself, and to take compassionate and skilled care of her patients.

In response to other reviews I would like to point out that there are many more than "a few" of us who have experience with this topic. It may be that in other people's human experience it does not seem as if "many" people have shared this life but there are a large number of individuals living with this, as well as their supporting family members. This book explores more than anything for me the importance of loving oneself and the mental and emotional challenges faced by not only families who have loved ones that identify as transgender or gender queer but most especially human beings who identify as transgender males, and like the author, transgender females.

I emailed the author of this book and told her I had so many emotions reading this book that I couldn't come up with an apt description. I finally found a word - triumphant. I knew that reading about the journey of her life would be difficult, but hearing the details of her struggle to just be herself and also how it affected all the people around her, family, children, parents and friends.

Few of us, I think, would willingly throw our lives into chaos in order to change who we know we are. But it wasn't a choice for Jessica, it was a "must." I also learned about not only changes in her body, but her mind as well, something we who are born in the "right" body take for granted. It's tough enough to get through this life, given a traditional role. I am so glad she wrote this book and highly recommend it.
