Incredibly moving pictures of a four-year-old girl swimming with her family for the first time just two days before she died have been shared. Little Evelyn Nolan, who loved water, lost her battle against a rare one in 168 million condition on Friday. She had to be cradled in the water by mother Debbie Nolan and father Elliot Nolan while still attached to a life-supporting ventilator in what is believed to be a medical first. Mrs Nolan, 41, said her daughter smiled the whole time during the swim and praised hospital staff, who worked for 24 hours to make the parents' dream happen. She said the experience they shared with their 'warrior princess' was 'magical' as the hospital's hydrotherapy pool was decorated with fairy lights and music played through speakers.

At least 159 people were killed and 100 people are believed to be trapped under rubble after the 6.2-magnitude quake struck at 3.30am local time this morning while villagers slept in their beds. Today rescuers spoke of hearing children's screams from the rubble and locals were spotted frantically digging with their bare hands to try and save loved ones. One man, Guido Bordo, 69, lost his sister and her husband after they were trapped inside their holiday house in the hamlet of Illica, north of hard-hit Amatrice. Before their deaths were confirmed, he had described how he could only hear the sound of cats as he scrambled to find his loved-ones beneath the rubble. But as the desperate search for survivors continued tonight, an eight-year-old girl was pulled alive from the rubble.

An alien enthusiast claims to have found an object on Mars that depicts 'the horror of the death of a species'. Patrick Hardison, 42, a father-of-five, says he has spent the last 12 months adjusting to feeling 'normal' again after suffering 14 years of stares and comments after being horrifically burned (inset before the accident, left after the fire, and right after his transplant). Hardison, a former firefighter, was 27 when the roof of a burning mobile home collapsed on him, causing his mask to melt on to his face and destroying his features. Last August he received a full face transplant in a 26-hour operation in New York, and says it has changed his life completely.

The serviceman, 30, has been named locally as father-of-one Ciaran Maxwell (pictured). Anthony Roberts murdered Guida Rufino (pictured together, left), the mother of his young daughter, on January, 31 this year, just over 24 hours after she had told him she wanted to end their relationship for good. An inquest heard today how her friend Johanna Coleman was tied up in the next room and heard him beating her until the noises suddenly stopped. Roberts had slashed her throat, then killed himself by cutting along line that he had previously drawn on his leg to mark the major artery at their Bradford home (right).

The world's largest aircraft hit a telegraph pole and suffered cockpit damage as it crash landed at its base today. The striking 320ft-long Airlander 10, nicknamed the 'Flying Bum', made its maiden voyage last Wednesday. The aircraft, which can carry a ten-tonne pay load, crashed at Cardington Airfield in Bedfordshire today. The Airlander is on sale for £25million and will be able to stay airborne for five days during manned flights. The developers say the plane can be used for surveillance, communications, delivering aid and passenger travel.

Amid soaring temperatures of up to 33C, throngs of beachgoers flocked to Brighton beach to soak up the last of the sunshine before the washout Bank Holiday weekend. And among the crowd at the popular beach was a group of women, happily playing in the surf while wearing full traditional Islamic dress (main and inset). The group, which was made up of women and children, were seen paddling shin-deep in the water, making the most of what is expected to be the hottest day of the year. Temperatures climbed to 33.9C (93F) in Gravesend, Kent - but the two-day spell of fine conditions is set to turn on its head very soon. Today's scorching conditions topped the previous record set on July 19 when the mercury rose to 33.5C in Oxfordshire. But a change will happen when the warm 'Spanish plume' moving up from the South meets cold Atlantic air coming in from the West. This forces the hot air over the cooler front, triggering rain, thunderstorms and even hail.

The alarming footage shows the RNLI team battled incredibly difficult conditions while looking for Joy Godfray (inset) off the coast of Jersey - but she was tragically later pronounced dead at hospital. Godfray lost her life the day before her 32nd birthday on Green Island Beach in Jersey on the evening of Saturday, August 20 after stepping into the sea with a male friend. She became the sixth person to die in a beach tragedy across Britain over the weekend.

Alexander Polli, one of the world's most celebrated and daring wingsuit pilots, has tragically died after smashing into a tree during a flight. The accident took place in the Couloir de l'Ensa mountainous area in Chamonix in the French Alps. Mr Polli, 31, reached international fame after posting a video of himself flying through a small hole in a huge rock called the 'Roca Forada' in Montserrat, Spain. The video, seen more than 13 million times, shows the skilled pilot in his wingsuit flying through the hole at 155 mph (250 kph).
