Brother love! Nick and Joe Jonas get matching arrow tattoos ahead of their big moments on stage at MTV VMAs

Nick and Joe Jonas each had a little something extra when they hit the stage separately at the MTV Video Music Awards - new ink art.

The brothers made it a night to remember as they went in for matching arrow tattoos ahead of the big show at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Nick shared the inking process on Snapchat and a glance at the buzzing minutes during which the tattoo artist worked her wonders on one and then the other Jonas.

While Nick got his arrow inked on his left bicep, Joe got his tattoo on his right bicep.

What a picture they made too, the brothers standing side by side, arms barely touching and showing off the simple yet significant tattoos.

Nick performed a rousing rendition of Bacon alongside Ty Dolla Sign while Joe and his new band DNCE won Best New Artist.

The meaning of the straight arrows, meanwhile, wasn't explained by Nick, but judging by their history it's a sign of their close bond.

Nick was most recently linked to actress Lily Collins, whom he spoke of fondly in May.

'We went out a couple of times. She is amazing,' Nick told Page Six. 'We have known each other for years, just running in the same circles.

'I’ve enjoyed meeting different people and spending time with people with all the cards on the table. All people need human interaction at some level. And at my age too, dating is important, getting to know yourself by meeting different people, seeing what it’s all about.'

As for Joe, his arrow might be a reflection of his break-up late last year from model Gigi Hadid who dumped him for Zayn Malik.

Joe wrote a few scathing songs about the 21-year-old beauty while working on his latest album.

But Joe appeared to be feeling more forgiving, telling The Sun: 'Those songs in particular didn't make the album.

'You might hear them eventually, songs leak all the time, but I think the place I was in my life when I wrote them, I'm not there anymore, so it wouldn't make sense to release them.'
