After the shooting deaths of Mayci Breaux and Jillian Johnson during a screening of her movie Trainwreck, Amy Schumer became a passionate advocate for gun control.

Now the comedian has revealed that in the immediate aftermath of the devastating 2015 murders, her BFF Jennifer Lawrence helped her process the tragedy with a well-timed joke text.

The actress wrote 'It's your fault,' something that Schumer says made her feel close to her A-list pal, with whom she has previously vacationed, and with who she appeared on stage at the Golden Globes.

'It’s like yes, of course, yes, you connect to that, two women were murdered. But knowing it was my movie, and… that they went and they bought tickets and wanted to go see this movie, it just crushed me. I felt so powerless.

'And it felt a little bit like something that I had done, that there was a connection to me actually hurting people.'

The murders spurred Schumer into doing everything she could to prevent a repeat of the tragedy.

'I didn’t really know how to react. I was so upset. [Then] I got really angry, and I was like, this is not OK. I want to really do something.'

She joined forces with her distant relative, New York Senator Chuck Schumer, and gave a press conference calling for tighter gun control laws.

'I started going to events and meeting all these families of victims,' Schumer said.

'I am a lifer, I am in this. I really hope I don’t have to die for it, but I would.'

Schumer said she knew her public position on gun control made her a target.

'Security is up,' she said. 'I’m really trying to protect myself. I am not being an idiot.'
