Everything is Burning, Man! Massive wooden art installations and buildings at festival in the middle of the desert go up in flames as party heads into its last days

One of the world's most famous parties is going up in flames.

The thousands of people who camped out in the middle of the Nevada desert for the annual Burning Man festival have started to bring the wild week to a close by setting fire to the huge wooden sculptures and installations created for the event.

Amazing photographs show some of the incredible artwork, including the pyramids called the Catacomb of Veils, being engulfed in flames. Huge plumes of thick, black smoke rose into the sky once the fires were set on Friday afternoon.

Pictures taken later in the night showed some of the 70,000 party-goers stood around smaller exhibits as they burned to the ground, while some brave attendees appeared ride bikes around the edge of the flames.

One couple seemed unable to keep their cool amid the rapidly rising temperature, leaning in for a kiss in front of the flames. Others were seen throughout the day on Friday making the most of the time left for this year's party, climbing through and dancing inside the installations yet to be torched.

More than 70,000 have made the voyage to Black Rock City in the middle of the Nevada desert for the mind-bending festival, which runs from August 28 to September 5 this year.

Incredible aerials shots taken earlier in the week showed the horde of people sprawling out across the desert, with RVs, cars, tents and other forms of shelter littering the landscape.

This year's celebrity visitors include Katy Perry, 31, socialite Paris Hilton, 35, and British actress and model Cara Delevingne, 24, joining the growing ranks of stars who have made the trek to the festival.

On Saturday, the centerpiece of the giant desert party - the enormous sculpture of a man - will be set alight as the revelers dance beneath it. The event, which this year has the theme 'da Vinci's workshop', is described as an 'annual experiment in temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance'.
