Battle of the bums: Kate's £21.99 trousers show Pippa's not the only one with a distracting derriere

  • Kate's jazzy tight-fitting pants won rave reviews on social media
  • Duchess, who usually dresses demurely, won plaudits for the style change
  • Little sister Pippa once captured attention with her bridesmaid dress
  • But Kate showed the world how good she looks in form fitting clothes too

Jazzy: Kate in her figure-hugging trousers

Her demure sartorial choices regularly elicit admiring remarks.

But yesterday the Duchess of Cambridge took a risk as she stepped out in casual leggings.

Not that she should have worried at the reaction. The Gap skinny ankle pants – currently on sale at £21.99 – went down a storm with royal watchers.

Particularly eye-catching from behind when coupled with her short, tailored blazer, the trousers featured a jazzy Ikat print.

Apart from making her look stylishly casual, the figure-hugging trousers displayed a derriere as enviable as her sister Pippa’s, which captured the wandering eye of the nation at the Duchess’ wedding in 2011.

Despite being a perhaps daring fashion choice for a future Queen, Kate’s trousers received rave reviews from royal watchers on Twitter, where they were described as a ‘surprise departure’ but ‘cute’.

The Duchess, 34, who was on the last day of her two-day tour of the Duchy of Cornwall with her husband Prince William, also 34, completed her outfit with a navy Smyth blazer, a simple camisole top and a pair of her favourite wedges.

She wore her hair in bouffant half updo as she toured the Eden Project, sometimes sheltering from the rain under an umbrella.

Pippa Middleton's bum is famous thanks to THAT bridesmaid's dress but now her elder sister has shown hers off to the world too in a pair of jazzy figure-hugging trouders

Make a style statement in Kate's printed trousers from Gap

It's not often that the Duchess of Cambridge surprises us with her sartorial choices.

The royal beauty is a fan of pretty dresses and a core set of labels like L.K. Bennett, Erdem, Jenny Packham, Temperley London, Hobbs and Beulah. But today she made us look twice as she visited the Eden Project in the British county of Cornwall.

Ditching the dresses in favor of skinny trousers, Kate was an altogether more casual version of herself as she toured the visitor attraction. And not only that but these pants are from Gap, a high street store that's new to her extensive collection.

We love the bold blue Ikat print and the slim fit and the good news for any fans of the Duchess' style is they're still available to buy. In fact they're in the sale so they're a right royal bargain. Click (right) to snap them up now before they're gone for good.

Then style with a navy tailored blazer like Kate's. Hers is by SMYTHE and you can find it in our edit below.

The couple surprised tourists at the attraction, famed for its hexagonal-panelled biomes filled with plants and trees from across the globe, by making an impromptu trip there after their planned helicopter flight to the Isles of Scilly was delayed by fog.

The royal couple, who spent more than an hour and a half touring the attraction and chatting to visitors, stopped for quick refreshments half way round at a hut selling smoothies containing the African fruit baobab from Malawi

Nicole White, 27, introduced the Cambridges to a baby dinosaur puppet from the attraction’s Dinosaur Uprising project, which rather startled Kate.

She said: ‘Kate didn’t see the baby muttaburrasaurus at first as his colours blended in with my clothes so she had quite a giggle once she realised what I was holding.

‘I just told her that Mutty really wanted to meet her and she said ‘I bet the kids really like him’. She said George loves dinosaurs and would have loved to be here to meet him.’

When they finally reached the Isles of Scilly, William reminisced about family holidays there with his mother Princess Diana when he was a small boy.

Gladys Perkins, 89, one of dozens of inhabitants from St Martin’s island who welcomed the Duke and Duchess to their picturesque home, said: ‘I said to William, ‘you haven’t been here for a good while’ and he said ‘no’. I said the ‘last time you were here with your brother you were only so high’.”

The pensioner, whose husband is a Duchy of Cornwall tenant farmer on St Martin’s, described how the second-in-line to the throne would visit the neighbouring island of Tresco with his parents and brother.
