Eating is certainly about more than just satisfying your taste buds when you are a tennis champion. And while Venus Williams' pre-match diet consists of plenty of greens and lean protein, she admits to chowing down on fried rice the morning of her first match of the US Open.

The 36-year-old tennis star, who has seven Grand Slam titles to her name, kept a food diary for Cosmopolitan.com, revealing everything she ate during the four days leading up Thursday's match against Julia Goerges of Germany.

And clearly Venus' diet of green juice, rice, and kale salads does the body good. The professional athlete earned herself her 70th US Open win during the grueling match that went on for nearly three hours.

Venus woke up at 7am on Monday, and she admitted that like many other people, she finds it difficult to eat early in the morning.

However, unlike most people who are just heading to the office, Venus needs to eat enough to keep her energized during her practices.

Keeping that in mind, Venus said she tries to have a 'protein smoothie, a green juice, or some sort of fruit', and she ended up kicking off this week with 'some nectarines because they're in season'.

By 12pm Venus was finished with practice, and unsurprisingly, very hungry. She explained that she stopped by Christopher's Kitchen — her 'favorite vegan spot' in Palm Beach, Florida.

And while it's certainly not your typical fast-food fare, the busy athlete did order her lentils with quinoa and strawberry milkshake with protein powder to go before heading to her office, where she runs her respective interior design and athletic wear brands, V Starr Interiors and EleVen by Venus.

While working she had kale chips and a green juice for snacks, and then she headed to her father's house where she made him a kale salad topped with chicken, ginger, garlic, and pepper and dressed with orange and lemon juice.

Before her flight to New York that night, Venus enjoyed a 6pm hip-hop dance class at Sean's Dance Factory, keeping her energy up with dates, cashews, and of course, water.

After the class, she went home and packed for the US Open and headed to the airport.

Despite her busy Monday, Venus woke up at 7am again the next day. However, this time she kicked off her day with an egg-white omelet with tomato and cheese.

Instead of working out like she usually would, she had to get ready for a promotional event for the US Open.

By 12:30pm she was at practice, and after she and her team headed to The Little Beat, where she had 'sweet potatoes, green beans, and cabbage and soba noodles.'

Later that night, she and her younger sister Serena, 34, attended some more US Open events, and she didn't get home until 9pm.

'Back at the hotel, I ate a quiet dinner,' she explained. 'When I travel, I always keep some food in the hotel to stir up if I need to: I made a salad of mixed greens, Newman's Own Caesar dressing, and a diced tomato.

'I followed it up with plain yogurt and local honey from New York.'

On Wednesday, the day before her match, Venus woke up at 9:30am, fed her dog Harry, and had fresh granola with Silk almond milk, a brand she recently partnered with.

For lunch, she enjoyed brown rice, beans, grilled shrimp, and fresh fruit to satisfy her sweet tooth. After physical therapy and getting some much-deserved rest, Venus walked down the hall of her hotel room to visit Serena.

'Since she'd already ordered dinner, I figured I might as well benefit, and shared her fennel and crab salad and gluten-free porcini penne pasta,' she said.

Venus also had an 8pm snack that night, but instead of candy or chips, she opted for Nature's Addict fruit snacks.

On the day of her match, the tennis star slept in and went for a run with her dog at 10am before loading up on carbohydrates.

'I always eat a huge breakfast on match days even though my stomach hates it,' she said. 'Today, I warmed up some fried rice in my room.'

For lunch, she had sweet potatoes, rice, and pre-mixed the energy drinks she takes to the tennis court with her for 'energy and hydration'.

After her big win that afternoon, Venus did a cool down workout and 'refueled and rehydrated with water with electrolyte powder' before having some more 'sweet potatoes, rice, and barbecue tofu'.

A couple of hours later, at 9:30pm, she had her last meal of the day.

'I often finish my days with a Caesar salad — this time, it just had some mixed greens, tomatoes, and Caesar dressing,' she explained. 'Then I spent an hour on the table doing physical therapy to undo all the damage done during the match.'
