Legendary New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor has been arrested in Florida for DUI after police say he crashed while trying to change lanes on a freeway.

Cops say Taylor was driving his Bentley through Palm Beach at around 5.20pm on Friday when he attempted to move between lanes.

But during the maneuver police say the 57-year-old clipped a motorhome, causing his car to sideswipe a police cruiser, knocking the side mirror off.

Nobody was injured during the accident, cops told WPTV, and there was no significant damage to the cruiser.

However, Taylor was taken to the Palm Beach County Jail where he was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Taylor, who was drafted as a first round pick and second overall by the Giants in 1981, went on to spent a 13-year career with the team.

He won two Super Bowls, made more than 1,000 tackles and 130 sacks in his time with the team, retiring in 1993 as one of the greatest defensive players of all time.

Taylor was also inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999.

But his career was also marred by problems with drugs and alcohol including multiple arrests and a ban in 1988.

Taylor also had problems with substance abuse during his career, including multiple drug arrests and an NFL ban in 1988

After retirement he insisted those problems had been put behind him, and began working for the NFL in front of the camera during broadcasts.

However, Talyor has twice been arrested for attempting to buy crack, and in 2010 was busted paying $300 to have sex with a 16-year-old girl.

The girl, who had been reported missing from home, had been brought to him in a hotel room when police swooped.

Taylor eventually pleaded guilty to patronizing a prostitute and having sex with a minor and was placed on probation.

In June this year his wife, Lynette Taylor, was arrested for domestic violence after throwing an 'unknown object' at the player, leaving him with a three-inch laceration to the back of his head.

She was also booked for resisting arrest after flailing at officers when they arrived at the home, according to reports from the time.

The charges were dropped after Taylor said he does not want to prosecute.
