Brie Larson apologises for 'appearing to endorse animal cruelty' after posting throwback pic petting dolphin

Brie Larson has apologised for posting a throwback pic of herself petting a dolphin.

Despite being just 14 in the photo, the PC brigade quickly descended on the actress for 'endorsing animal cruelty'.

In the original post on Friday, she shared with her 524,000 Instagram followers a cute pic of her teenage self, laughing with unbridled joy as she comes face to face with the mammal.

She doesn't specify where it is, but it is clearly a holding pen for tourists to meet the creatures; besides the captivity itself, there is no evidence the animals are being abused, and they certainly aren't shying away from the interaction.

'I touched a Dolphins belly while sporting a trucker hat in 2004. #noregrets #fbf' she originally captioned it, mistakenly believing her wardrobe would be the most contentious point.

The picture quickly attracted comments pointing out that the animals were being 'enslaved for your entertainment' as well as making the inevitable comparison to her Oscar winning role in last year's Room.

She then tweaked the caption, adding 'EDIT: I do not support animal cruelty', but it wasn't enough to fully stem the tide.

Although most commenters urged her to 'ignore the haters', she still felt it necessary  to follow it up with an apology post.

'Yo - it's me again,' she began, along with a close-up selfie of a rather serious expression.

'I posted a photo previously that encapsulated a silly moment in my weird life. I forgot that through social media and random interviews you do not know all the facets of me and what my concerns are.

'We should be concerned about the well being of all animals. Yes, Dolphins. Along with every other creature. There are problems with animals in captivity. There are problems with animals living in the wild.'

She said it has always been one of her priorities to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, before apologising 'if the photo appeared to endorse animal cruelty'.

'I don't believe any living thing deserves miss treatment (sic). In the comments section feel free to discuss your thoughts, concerns, articles ANYTHING that can turn this into a moment of education for myself all who are interested.

'We gotta remember that we will make mistakes but we can learn from them, together. Much love,' she concluded.
