Tennis fan Hugh Grant puts on a loved-up display with partner Anna Eberstein as they watch the US Open in New York

Last month he revealed he is far from the polite Englishman he often plays on-screen, calling himself a 'nasty piece of work'.

But Hugh Grant looked happy and relaxed as he watched a game of tennis with his Swedish partner Anna Eberstein, 37, at the US Open in New York on Sunday.

The couple, who  share two young children together, were present to watch Caroline Wozniacki play Madison Keys at the Arthur Ashe Stadium Queens.

Hugh, 55, looked dapper in a crisp white shirt and grey trousers, sporting silver hair and sunglasses.

Mother-of-two Anna put on a chic display in a black jumper dress, leaving her long blonde hair loose.

Sporting a cast on her right leg, she was helped out of the car as she arrived at the venue.

And the couple soon found their seats, laughing and giggling as they watched the game.

Grant has been spending time with his four children by two different mothers. He has Tabitha, four, and Felix, two, with former lover Tinglan Hong.

And he has a three-year-old son, John, and an eight-month-old daughter with Swedish television producer Anna Eberstein.

And despite his on-screen persona, Grant told the latest edition of Entertainment Weekly he is quite the opposite in real life.

‘I get very annoyed when people think I’m nice or diffident or a polite English gentleman. I’m a nasty piece of work and people should know that,’he said.

The star also admits being consumed by overwhelming stage fright, saying the reason he has taken so few leading roles in recent years is because of his ‘terror’ in front of the cameras, which started shortly after the release of his massive 1999 hit Notting Hill.

He says: ‘I have this absurd syndrome where I get these out-of-the-blue, pathetic panic attacks. It’ll be in a very easy scene when everything is going swimmingly and then suddenly, bang, I’m shvitzing [sweating] and can’t remember my lines. At one stage, I was asking directors not to say “Action!” because I found that word sent me into paroxysms of terror.’

However, the news hasn’t stopped Grant from being tipped for an Oscar for his latest role. In the critically acclaimed Florence Foster Jenkins, he stars as the husband of a New York socialite who dreams of becoming an opera singer.

Grant reveals that he was lured out of ‘retirement’ by the chance to appear alongside Hollywood legend Meryl Streep, who plays Florence.

And his return to work – with a reported hefty pay cheque – has had one pleasant side effect for the actor. He was spotted in London driving his latest possession – a limited-edition silver Ferrari F12 TDF, worth £340,000.
