They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

And that was certainly the case for Simon Cowell and his mini-me son Eric, two, as they headed out in Beverly Hills on Sunday to grab a frozen yoghurt with Lauren Silverman.

The 56-year-old music mogul and his little one looked like absolute doppelgangers as they enjoyed a low-key outing, with both father and son sporting matching grey T-shirts for the occasion.

Cowell kept a protective hand on the little boy's arm as they crossed a street in Beverly hills clutching their icy sweets.

Eric was dressed in a pair of pinstripe shorts with a grey t-shirt and some sandals.

He clung tightly to his large tub of treats with one hand and had a small plastic spoon in the other.

Cowell was casual in pale blue jeans and matching -shirt and drove his family about time in his shiny Bentley.

The gray bearded X Factor judge was also seen hungrily tucking into his ice cream as he stood on the sidewalk.

His girlfriend, who also has a son with ex-husband Andrew Silverman who divorced her as a result of her affair with Cowell, was stylish in ripped skinny jeans and gold sandals.

Silverman, 39, added a camisole top decorated with red roses and lace.

Cowell recently gushed to People about Eric who it seems has inherited his ability to spot talent.

He told the magazine he likes to have the youngster join him for the talent show auditions.

'He's brilliant,' Cowell said. 'He's very good to watch funnily enough, because I can see when he's bored and when he's up dancing. He's a good critic already. He's unpaid but he's helping me!'

He added that having children had made him a 'softer' judge, as it had changed the way he views young people on talent shows.

'There's no question when you actually have a kid, it does make you feel different because you understand how you would feel if it was your son up there,' he said.
