World Cup winner Sami Khedira shared his thoughts on Bastian Schweinsteiger's ongoing clash with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

The 29-year-old called the situation 'a shame', and said he took his Germany team-mate's experience as a cautionary tale.

'I never want to be in the position where a club asks me to leave,' Khedira told the Welt am Sonntag. 'A player with a great career behind him doesn't deserve to have someone tell him "hey, get lost."'

Schweinsteiger, who was sent to train with the reserves in the preseason, has yet to make a match-day squad under new Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

The 32-year-old former Bayern Munich midfielder was also recently left out of United's Europa League squad.

Khedira said his personal history with Schweinsteiger made the conflict hard to take.

'I think the situation in Manchester is a shame, because Bastian is a player I've really looked up to. At the World Cup in 2010 he was very important for me.

'He was the boss, I was young and learned a lot playing next to him. And then he went on to be a great captain.'

Still, Khedira said he understood where his former Real Madrid coach was coming from in trying to put a stamp on Manchester United.

'Football is a business. I'm not a daydreamer. If Jose Mourinho has other plans, you have to accept that. And I know from Bastian that that those two had a good talk.'

Khedira also shared his thoughts on another Manchester United player: Paul Pogba, with whom the German played in Juventus' midfield last season and who cost the Red Devils £89million.

'The market is a bit overheated, but if a club has the money it can spend it. I would have paid that much for him - he wasn't on offer for any less.

'His performances will pay it back. He's a player who can be a difference-maker.'
