Gorgeous models, NBA pals and 'hide-and-seek at his mansion: Welcome to the lavish life of investor George Soros' playboy son who's set to inherit $24bn

  • Alexander Soros, 30, is the son of 86-year-old investor George Soros
  • This summer in the Hamptons, he is brushing shoulders with New York City scenesters and playing host at a rented 20,000-sq-ft compound
  • But those closest to him say he is the Hampton's most unlikely bachelor as he is working on his Ph.D and hoping to settle down

From slumber parties with gorgeous models to hanging with NBA players at his $72 million Hamptons summer retreat, Alexander Soros is really living it up.

The 30-year-old philanthropist and son of investor George Soros - who is worth around $24.9billion - appears to enjoy playing host while renting out 'Villa Maria,' the Water Mill mansion belonging to late shoe designer Vince Camuto.

Lavish gatherings at the sprawling 20,000-sq-ft compound this summer have included lobster bakes, games of drunken hide-and-seek, bottles of rosé, according to the New York Post.

Fashion designers Timo Weiland and Maxwell Osborne, New York Knicks Star Joakim Noah and model Caroline Vreeland have been among the many notable guests.

He also features on the Instagram accounts of beautiful models including Chanel Iman and Najah Wakil.

But Soros is the Hampton's most unlikely playboy, according to those closest to him.

While the New York University graduate might rub shoulders with the New York City scenesters and may have the party pad of the Hamptons, he is also busy working on his Ph.D.

Currently, he is writing his thesis titled 'Jewish Dionysus: Heine, Nietzsche and the Politics of Literature' while pursuing a doctorate in modern European history at the University of California at Berkeley.

'He will be the best host,' close friend Maxwell Osborne, who is co-designer of the Public School fashion line, told the Post.

'But there's always a moment when he... disappears to do work.'

Among his many roles, Soros launched the Alexander Soros Foundation in 2012, which has donated an estimated $10 million, according to the Post.

The foundation, is 'a grant-making organization promoting civil rights, social justice, and education in the United States and abroad,' according to OSF.

He is currently also listed as the managing partner of Soros Brothers Investments and is the founding chair of the board of directors of Bend the Arc Jewish, described as a leading progressive Jewish domestic lobby in the US.

As he works to come from behind his 86-year-old father's shadow, Soros has also come a long way from the 'very shy chubby kid,' he was in Katonah, New York.

There, he grew up with his 27-year-old brother who is a sculptor, and the pair went on to attend a private school in Stamford, Connecticut.

The brothers have three older siblings from his father's first marriage to Annaliese Witschak, before their father married their mother, Susan Weber.

While in school, a classmate told the Post that Soros was never 'flashy,' noting he drove a Lexus SUV that was passed down to him, did not wear designer clothes and carried a briefcase to school.

WHO IS GEORGE SOROS?

Soros rose to fame and fortune two decades ago on a now-historic trade, in which he took on the Bank of England and shrewdly wagered on a devaluation of the British pound.

This led to his moniker - The Man Who Broke the Bank of England.

The move made him $1billion.

He was born in Budapest, studied at the London School of Economics and holds dual Hungarian-American citizenship.

After selling seaside souvenirs he managed to get a foot on the financial ladder with a job at Singer & Friedlander in London in 1954, before settling in the US.

He went on to become one of the richest people in the world through fund management.

He's worth around $24.9billion.

During the summers, he reportedly took a job working in the mail room of his father's Manhattan hedge fund.

Sometimes he would host parties for the basketball teams at his family's 14-room estate, which featured a movie theater, go-carts, and a llama farm.

The players called the home 'Richie Rich,' Soros' ex-schoolmate told the Post.

While Soros is close to his father now, this was not always the case, which he alluded to in a 2012 interview with the New York Times, describing their relationship as complicated.

He and his brother were often left in the hands of their nanny while their father was very busy, according to the Post.

'When [Alex and Gregory] were younger, George was very busy,' Bill Zabel, Soros' godfather and the Soros family attorney told the newspaper.

'He is the kind of father who can interact with a 15-year-old much better than a two-year-old.'

Eventually, his parents divorced in 2005 during his freshman year in college, with his father later going on to marry his third wife, Tamiko Bolton.

Soros, who is Global and Advisory Board Member for the Open Society Foundations, kept his close group of friends while in college, who protected him from those only wanting to use him for his money, a longtime friend who wanted to remain anonymous told the Post.

But as life took its course and the friends focused on their lives, people found out who Soros was and 'immediately tried to pull him into [the party] world,' the friend said.

Soros, who graduated from NYU with a BA in History, enrolled at Berkley in 2010 and the following year joined the board of Open Society Foundations.

Soros also eventually improved his look, shedding a few pounds and improving his wardrobe, thanks to his designer pal Osborne.

He also got help for posing in pictures from party photographer Patrick McMullan, according to the Post.

Now, with his Ph.D thesis in the works, Soros is also hoping to settle down with the future in mind, recently purchasing the unit next to his Noho apartment.
