Would YOU wear a crotch-baring dress? Stylist reveals the underwear tricks for anyone brave enough to try fashion's most daring new trend

  • Models shocked at Venice Film Festival in crotch-baring dresses
  • Bella Hadid made the trend sky rocket with daring naked gown in Cannes
  • Stylist Naomi Isted advises against barely-there underwear
  • Recommends big pants and styling tape to protect modesty

It's become the red carpet gown of choice for any celebrity determined to steal the limelight.

Bella Hadid's profile rocketed after she flashed her thighs in a barely there wisp of red silk at this year's Cannes Film Festival and models Giulia Salemi and Dayane Mello made sure all eyes were on them in crotch-baring dresses at the premiere of The Young Pope this weekend.

Now dresses with eye-wateringly high side slits are hitting the high street, but can a real woman ever get away with wearing one and maintaining some shred of modesty?

Make a statement in jeweled Giuseppe Zanotti's

Models Giulia Salemi and Dayane Mello certainly ripped up the rule book when it came to dress code for the Venice Film Festival.

They certainly left quite little to the imagination but we can't say they didn't turn heads.

Dayane Mello might not have worn the most drool worthy dress (some might debate) but her sandals are definitely eye catching.

Her shoes are by the one and only Giuseppe Zanotti and the good news is you can click over to Neiman Marcus to get the exact pair.

Fashion Presenter and Stylist Naomi Isted admits she is not a fan of the trend, saying she feels it's a cynical trick.

'Celebrity Stylist are always looking for ways for their star clients to get global press and coverage, the more shocking an outfit the more coverage.

'There's a trend this year for everyone to wear sheer dresses with bodysuits underneath and this is an extreme extension of that.

'It's not a realistic for the public to wear. It's quite a dangerous look as it could go horribly wrong. If there's no underwear it's a potential fashion catastrophe.'

However, if you are brave enough to try retailers such as Lasula, Boohoo and Missy Empire are selling the daring dresses.

But don't fall into the trap of thinking that barely there underwear is the way to go.

Options include the C-string, which consists of the front of a thong-style pair of knickers, held up with wire at the back - or the Shibue: a strapless panty held in place using a soft adhesive gel.

However, Naomi advises against these skimpy lingerie options in favour of a classic pair of big pants.

'Go for skin toned shapewear,' she recommended. 'Ideally a big pant option which would be safer bet.

'If the skirt goes over to one side it will hopefully protect dignity at the back. Better still go for shapewear or a strapless bodysuit with a big pant in your skin tone.'

You might wonder how you can get away with underwear that offers good coverage under such skimpy dresses, but Naomi recommends using styling tape to place the slits around the hip bones, so that the crotch area is covered.

'If there are double slits, I would have it taped at the top in a v-shape where the slit is.

'You don't want it on the leg, as you need the dress to be able to flow. You want it right at the top of the slit to hold it in place.'

If you're thinking of trying a barely there dress, like this one from Missy Empire, stylist Naomi Isted recommends doing it on holiday where it's more acceptable to flash the flesh

If you are going to give it a go, Naomi doesn't recommend trying it on a Saturday night at your local nightclub.

'Try it on holidays where it doesn't matter about exposing so much flesh,' she said.

Bella Hadid's notorious Cannes dress came with a built in body suit to protect her modesty, but Naomi still warns against it as an option.

'A built in bodysuit still doesn't mean protection from embarrassing situations. I would personally avoid this very bold look,' she said.
