When asked by Kate whether wearing the bump made her fancy it for real, Renee was in no doubt, quickly answering: 'Of course, what an adventure!

'Kudos to the real mums out there who can’t take it off at the end of the day – it’s quite a load.'

Before the film went into production, and despite her acting success, Renee had taken a six-year break away from the silver screen.

Traveling to Liberia for a women’s charity, and spending time with her family, Renee explained the reasoning behind her decision to take some time away from the limelight.

She added during her Good Morning Britain interview: '[I wanted ] to have a little bit of normalcy. Learn some things that weren’t about researching a character. A different kind of life experience that’s all.'

The film catches up with Bridget who is now working a news producer, with awards under her belt and a more balanced approach to life than in the previous two movies.

However, her life is about to be turned upside down once again, as she discovers she's pregnant.

And Bridget is unsure whether the father of the child is the faithful Mark Darcy, (Colin Firth), or the dashing American Jack Qwant, played by Grey’s Anatomy’s Doctor McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey).

She explained: 'Everyone in the gallery was very generous to let us come in among the controlled chaos, and there is so much, I had no idea the potential for extraordinary disaster at every moment.'

In fact the breakfast show's crew made such a good impression on the film's producers, they even made a cameo in the film.

When asked why we all love the character Bridget so much, Renee was in no doubt, telling Kate: ‘Because of her humanity, she’s insecure and we’re privy to her anxieties.

'We all relate to being the face of escalating disaster and not being able to do anything about it. It gives us all permission to be imperfect as well. It’s inspiring.'

Two years ago, Renee raised eyebrows on the red carpet of Elle magazine’s Women In Hollywood Awards, by turning up with an apparently thinner face and wider, open eyes.

She has adamantly denied she had plastic surgery for the event, and last week explained her altered appearance was down, not to any artificial procedure, but to simple preoccupation.

She said: 'I’d been staying with a friend in Los Angeles and the month before she’d been diagnosed with ALS [a neurological disease].

'The reason I went to that event was that she wanted me to go, so she could be on the red carpet with me and prove to herself she wasn’t being defeated by this terrible disease.

'And that’s what I was thinking about that day. I wasn’t thinking about what I looked like or what people thought. I was thinking about my friend.'

She said the idea of ageing has never held any fears for her.

Renee explained: 'I think a woman only gets more interesting as she gets older. Youth and superficial beauty have their place and that is, understandably, celebrated to a degree. But that’s so fleeting and it’s only for a moment in your life.

'As you mature, you’re not just getting older, you’re becoming more of who you are supposed to be, and becoming the best version of yourself, better and more interesting.

'It’s a more powerful beauty and it’s a more valuable beauty. Besides — I don’t want to stay the same! I’m curious about what comes next!'

Renee's co-star Patrick Dempsey spent Monday morning chatting to Lorraine Kelly on her ITV morning show.

The actor, 50, is known to millions of fans as McDreamy, after spending 11 years playing as neurosurgeon Dr. Derek 'McDreamy' Shepherd in the hit US drama Grey's Anatomy.

In the much anticipated film, Patrick plays Jack Qwant, Bridget's new American fling, but doesn't know whether he is the baby's father or not.

Patrick looked equally as dashing as his smooth talking character, wearing a charcoal grey suit and black and white spotted to talk about the film.

He then stopped by the This Morning studios alongside co-star Colin Firth to chat to hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby about the film.

Patrick said: 'I was a little nervous [about joining the franchise] because you don't know how you're going to fit in, but everyone was very accommodating.

'Enough time had passed so that it allowed us to get to know each other. Colin and I have a great connection, a great sense of humour. The chemistry came along.'

Colin added: 'We all felt like new boys and girls. We were supposed to slip back into it but I'd forgotten about it.'

The first time Patrick heard Renee's American voice was when she started doing press for the film, which he admitted confused him 'greatly' because he had thought of her as having a British accent like Bridget.

Premiere: Both Renee and Patrick will be appearing on the red-carpet later on Monday as they attend the premiere in the West End

He joked: 'Renee's Texas accent confused me greatly. She's supposed to be from Croydon or Oxfordshire or somewhere. She keeps the accent on set throughout and she never breaks character.

'[Renee and I] have kept in touch but we live 6,000 miles apart. We've seen each other but we're not like a rock band, who tour - we have our lives. Coming back together was lovely. It was like a rather dysfunctional family reunion.'

And the actor heaped praise on Renee for carting round her prosthetic baby bump throughout filming.

He said: 'Renee doesn't really weigh very much but she took off the bump and said "Look, this is what you've been carrying".'

Renee, Colin and Patrick will be appearing on the red-carpet later on Monday as they attend the world premiere of Bridget Jones's Baby in London's West End.
