In the new issue of Glamour, the bombshell said her different appearance got her teased. 'Kids can be cruel, and they used to make fun of me for having long legs and bushy eyebrows,' she said. 'My mom would flip through magazines and say, “Look, all these models have that too.” I decided I wanted to be a model.'

She added that she wasn't exposed to Louis Vuitton and Gucci during her teen years because 'in Florida you just wear bikinis and flip-flops.'

Upton, who is engaged to Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, also said she started off her career small.

Her first gig was for a local Miami magazine. 'We shot at a Crunch gym. We had to be there at three in the morning, and it went until three in the afternoon, and they never fed us. I was like, No wonder models are so skinny!'

Not her thing: She added: 'At first I tried to diet to become their image, but eventually I realized that it wasn’t realistic—that this is just the shape of my body'

And she had to fight body shaming too from her peers. When asked if she was told to lose weight she replied: 'All. The. Time.'

She added: 'At first I tried to diet to become their image, but eventually I realized that it wasn’t realistic—that this is just the shape of my body.

'So I had to block them out. I think that the people who are the loudest about wanting to change you are the people with the least amount of vision and creativity.'

So it's no surprise that one of her icons is Ashley Graham. 'She loves her body and is always talking about it, is inspiring.'

And Kate said she kept her confidence because some people were throwing work at her.

'Where I grew up, it was considered a great thing to have a curvy body to fill out a bathing suit. For that to be a negative was so confusing to me. And besides, when I started working, I was booked constantly, mostly for catalog work. So when people were saying, “Oh, she doesn’t have the right look for a model,” I thought, "Then why am I working every single day?"'

As far as how she likes her body now, she said she just wants it fit.

When she's with her trainer she does weight training with cardio in the circuit.

'A couple of years ago, there was a switch for me. I used to work out to have my hips be a certain size. Now I do it for myself, because I want to be strong. I want to have energy. In my mind I feel like I can beat someone up—I really want to be able to do it!'

She added she wants a 'nice butt' and if it's 'a quarter inch bigger than the modeling-world standard, that’s fine.'

As far as her diet, she keeps it simple and she doesn't deprive herself. 'I try to do a sugar-controlled diet and eat lots of protein and veggies. But if I’m craving something, I’ll just have it.'

These days Kate feels the pressure to be like every other model and use social media to be all about her, but she won't.

Kate is only one of Glamour's three cover models for October.  The others are Emily Ratajkowski and Joan Smalls. Emily looked every inch a Hollywood siren in her cover where she wore a red dress. Joan had on a floral frock over a white tank top.
