John Tortorella, the Team USA and Columbus Blue Jackets head coach, has said that if any of his players sit during the national anthem he will force them to sit out the rest of the game. Tortorella, who has earned a reputation for speaking his own mind at times, made the comments in relation to Colin Kaepernick, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback who has been kneeling for the national anthem during preseasons games.

Earl Valentine kicked in the door of his ex-wife's home in Norlina, North Carolina, on Tuesday and shot her before killing his son, police chief Taylor Bartholomew said. The chief said he later talked to Valentine on the phone and described him as 'cold and callous' and showing no remorse for the shootings. Valentine posted a video on his Facebook page admitting to his ex-wife's shooting. In it he said: 'She lied on me, had warrants taken out on me. She drug me all the way down to nothing,' Valentine said on the video. 'I loved my wife, but she deserved what she had coming.' Valentine is pictured left in the Facebook video and right in a previous mugshot.

Dechia Gerald, 38, the wife of officer Matthew Gerald, said she is sad that he will never get to meet his new child, but is considering the child a 'blessing' and a 'final reminder' of him. Gerald believes she fell pregnant on July 12, when her husband had a rare night off from helping to police protests in Baton Rouge following the killing of Alton Sterling by police. Five days later he died after being shot by Gavin Long, 29, a former Marine, at a gas station along with two other officers.

Danny Heinrich (left), of Minnesota, has confessed to abducting and killing 11-year-old Jacob Wetterling (right) nearly 27 years ago, putting to rest a mystery that had haunted the state and led to changes in national sex offender laws. Danny Heinrich made the admission as he pleaded guilty to federal child pornography charges on Tuesday that could put him behind bars for decades. Asked whether he abducted, sexually assaulted and murdered Jacob, Heinrich said: 'Yes I did.' He went on to describe the abduction in graphic detail, explaining how Jacob asked, 'What did I do wrong?' as Heinrich forced the child into his car. He then confessed to undressing the boy, molesting him and then shooting him before burying his body. On Tuesday, after the confession, Jacob's mother Patty spoke to reporters saying: 'For us Jacob was alive until we found him.'

Former host Gretchen Carlson's lawsuit named Roger Ailes (left), not Fox News, as a defendant. But Ailes attorneys' said Tuesday he had not contributed a dollar to the $20 million payment. 21st Century Fox agreed to pay the sum to Carlson (right) and apologized to her on Tuesday. Carlson claimed in the lawsuit that Ailes cancelled her show when she rebuffed his sexual advances. Ailes resigned from Fox News in July after Carlson went public with her allegations. He hasn't spoken out publicly since. 'We sincerely regret and apologize for the fact that Gretchen was not treated with the respect that she and all our colleagues deserve,' the statement from 21st Century Fox, Fox News' parent company, reads.

The Indianapolis man, who wanted to only be identified as Phillip, said passers-by had twice tried to steal the sign in the last month, and so he took matters into his own hands. He jerry-rigged the sign with fishing wire that had been painted green and put up a video camera on a nearby tree, ready to catch the next thief. Or at least their attempt. That moment came at the weekend, when a woman tried to quickly grab the sign (left) and make a run for it (center). But, as she was heading off - and as caught by the camera - the signs were yanked into place by the fishing line, causing the woman to fall forward on her face (right).

Kody Christiansen (right and circled left), the customer who bought Justin Bieber's lunch from Subway after the pop star's credit card declined, was living in a homeless shelter just a year ago. Christiansen told Page Six that he jumped in to pay for Bieber's $16-lunch (inset) consisting of a foot-long sandwich, four milk bottles and some cookies for dessert after his card declined. Christiansen, who is an actor, had lived in 'four or five homeless shelters' before getting back on his feet and continuing to pursue his acting career. He said he 'wasn't going to tell anyone' about the incident 'out of respect' for Bieber. Christiansen said he was in Los Angeles to sign copies of his memoir, Hollywood Heartbreak, New York Dreams, at the time and he even invited the singer to his book signing. He said Bieber told him he would 'definitely read this' and patted him on the shoulder and left.

Hannah Gavios (right), 23, got lost on pitch-black Railay Beach in the resort of Krabi when a local man who offered to show her the way to her hotel sexually assaulted her. 'I started punching him in the face and beating him up and biting off his ear. I was biting his ear so hard it almost came off. His ear was half torn off,' Ms Gavios said. She ran from him and feel off a cliff in the darkness. The man scrambled after her and sexually molested her again as she lay helpless. Eventually Ms Gavios, from New York, was saved (left) and rushed to hospital in Phuket.

The Paulding Light is a phenomenon near the Wisconsin border in the upper peninsula of Michigan that has left locals confounded and filled visitors with awe for half a century. The unincorporated area of Paulding is so tiny it doesn't even have census information. But every year dozens of people come out to see the mystery light for themselves. In 2010, Jeremy Bos, who was a grad student at Michigan Tech at the time, decided to find the origin of the light for himself. He brought a group of students out to observe the light and solve the mystery once and for all.

Miss District of Columbia, Cierra Jackson and Miss Tennessee, Grace Burgess (both pictured left), were declared the winners of the first night of the Miss America competition preliminaries Tuesday. Jackson won the swimsuit competition (top-right) while Burgess, topped the talent competition with a rendition of the Eagles classic 'Desperado.' Other rounds included a ballgown section (bottom-right). Jackson called her win a 'blessing', adding: 'You let your light shine and let other people see what happens.' The event was the first of three nights of preliminary competitions at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall, leading up to the new Miss America being crowned during Sunday night's nationally televised finale.

California prospector, Oscar Espinoza (left), of Modesto, found a rare gold nugget (right) that could be worth more than $70,000. The t-bone steak-sized nugget was discovered by Espinoza on Tuesday in Jamestown, California, which is now expecting a modern day gold rush. His friend and hotel owner, Charlie Morgan, told the station that he believes Espinoza could get $70,000 for it. But another local businessman said the nugget could spark collectors' interest, which would drive the price up four or five times higher.

Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge tells the true story of Seventh Day Adventist Desmond Doss, who enlists in the Army in WWII determined to save lives on the front line as a medic, but refuses to carry a gun on moral grounds. During the Battle of Okinawa, Doss saved the lives of more than 75 of his comrades who were stranded on a cliff - called Hacksaw Ridge. Doss, who died in 2006, was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Harry Truman in 1945. In Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge, Doss is played by actor Andrew Garfield (right), who rose to fame for his role in The Amazing Spider-Man

A baby, who is believed to be from the US, has gone viral on YouTube after her mother uploaded footage of her laughing like an 'evil genius'. The montage of the infant's laughter which sounds uncannily like a cartoon villain has been watched over 320,000 times. Her aunt Carrie Nieman posted on the video that, in fact, her niece's big brother taught her the distinctive giggle. One commenter added, 'Hope she can still do that laugh when she grows up. Hilarious.'

According to documentation recognised by Indonesian officials, Mbah Gotho was born on December 31 1870. He has not surprisingly outlived all 10 of his siblings as well as his four wives, the last of whom died in 1988. All of his children have also died, and now he is survived by his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. If correct, that makes him significantly older than the verified oldest person in the world ever, a title that belongs to French woman Jeanne Calment, who lived to be 122. Authorities searching for a missing 17-year-old girl at Burning Man caused nine-hour delays for the 60,000 people trying to leaving Nevada's Black Rock Desert. Gate Road was shut on Sunday night while organizers searched vehicles for the missing teenager who was later found safe in the camp known as Black Rock City. Aerial photographs on Monday (left) showed more than 10 lanes of bumper to bumper traffic as disgruntled festival-goers tried to reach the two-lane highway leading out of the desert. Magdim Muhametshin shared a photo of the traffic (top right) and wrote he had moved a hundred feet in three hours. Others complained about 12-hour waits and missed flights. According to the video's uploader Raphael Fortin, he was out with his girlfriend visiting Boston for a Coldplay concert when they 'heard a loud yelling and shouting'. A crowd of onlookers then tried to wrestle with the raging canine (centre), before eventually the two dogs were pulled apart. The pit bull bit into the neck of the beagle, which appeared lucky to not sustain life-threatening injuries.

Lance Stewart tried to complete the stunt for a YouTube video in late August - but the clip turned horribly wrong. It begins with Lance happily goofing around with friends in his backyard as a partner throws various pieces of fruit at him. Lance, armed with two swords, tries to slice the fruit as it comes flying in his direction (left, center and right). But suddenly, Lance lets out a heart-stopping scream, followed by a string of terrified 'Oh my God's. Then, Lance dramatically faints, sending his friends in a panic. A New York subway passenger was filmed removing her sweater and groping at her stomach as she wailed that she was 'fat'. She was traveling on the Q train when she had the meltdown which was filmed by fellow passengers in a video that was shared online, pictured. The woman, who was dressed in a bikini top and shorts, pulled at her flesh and slapped her body as onlookers laughed.

The £225 million mega yacht is owned by Andrey Melnichenko, known as the King of Bling. He and his wife Aleksandra, pictured, wanted to create something modern when they commissioned the boat. The vessel was designed by Philippe Starck, and Mrs Melinchenko was involved in the process of designing the interior of the yacht, which has hosted Hollywood royalty and costs up to £450,000 to fill up with fuel.

Three siblings will share a birthday after Lauren Stevenson (pictured bottom right with son) from Dickson in North Dakota, USA, gave birth to her third child on the same date in just as many years. Vlogger Ross Smith (pictured inset), from Columbus, Ohio, posted the video of his grandmother online. It shows her chugging a glass of wine (left), playing the saxophone (right) and showing off her dance moves. It has been viewed 19 million times and received thousands of likes. On his Facebook page Ross describes his grandma as his 'hero'.

The kitten can be heard purring loudly in the clip as she strokes his beard repeatedly, using one paw and then the other. She looks happy as the owner holds her up, allowing her to reach his facial hair. The video was filmed in Paulesti, Romania, and shared online.
