The customer who recently picked up Justin Bieber's $16 tab at Subway after the pop star's card was declined was living in a homeless shelter a year ago.
Kody Christiansen told Page Six that he jumped in to pay for Bieber's lunch consisting of a foot-long sandwich, four milk bottles and some cookies for dessert.
Christiansen said that when Bieber's card declined the singer said: 'I have to run out and get another card,' which is when he decided to step in and cover the $16 meal.

A source originally told DailyMail.com that the 22-year-old pop star stopped in to grab a bite to eat as his new flame Sofia Richie waited in the car, but his credit card was embarrassingly declined at a Subway in West Hollywood.
'I decided to pay it for him to spare him the second trip out into the crush of about 20 photographers,' Christiansen said.
'I said, "I got it." And he asked if I was sure,' Christiansen told Page Six.
'He was so thankful,' he added.
Christiansen, who is an actor, had lived in 'four or five homeless shelters' before getting back on his feet and continuing to pursue his acting career.
He told Page Six that he was chasing an acting career and experienced problems with drug and alcohol addiction.
Christiansen, who also works as a waiter at Soho restaurant Parigot, told Page Six that he 'wasn't going to tell anyone out of respect' for Bieber.
'I didn't want it to get out that he had his card declined,' he said.

Christiansen said he was in Los Angeles to sign copies of his memoir, Hollywood Heartbreak, New York Dreams.
He said he invited Bieber to his book signing, but Bieber told him he was 'actually leaving town'.
Christiansen said Bieber told him he would 'definitely read this' and patted him on the shoulder and left.
'He was totally cool with me and took an interest in my book. I was living in a New York City homeless shelter a year ago, and now I'm buying one of the biggest stars in the world lunch,' Christiansen told Page Six.
Multiple bodyguards were arrayed outside the store at 8859 Sunset Boulevard, keeping throngs of onlookers at bay.
The Ontario native spent much of the week pampering Lionel Richie's daughter, who'd turned 18 the day before.
The day of his West Hollywood Subway visit, the pop star whisked Nicole Richie's sister into Barney's New York.
And over the weekend, the couple had decamped to Los Cabos, Mexico for a romantic getaway that featured their typically effusive displays of affection.
