In a tribute to building on one's history, the Cartier Mansion threw a reopening party on Wednesday night after a two-and-a-half-year renovation.

And as a guest at the Manhattan fête, Katie Holmes followed in much the same tradition.

Wearing a frilly gold-coloured gown, the 37-year-old posed alongside her mother Kathleen Holmes, for whom an elegant black and white pantsuit did the trick.

The ex-Mrs Tom Cruise's dress was covered in green, blue and gold stitching that formed various natural patterns, such as butterflies, raindrops, and the sun.

Her hair was in an elaborate updo, giving a full view of the Dawson's Creek actress' large hoop earrings, which along with a gold bracelet and several rings accessorised the outfit.

Meanwhile, the Toledo native's mother augmented her ensemble with a white formal scarf tied neatly at her midriff, as well as with a black purse. Where hoops served her daughter, she opted for pearl earrings.

Katie Holmes led the star studded red carpet at a NYFW party thrown by Cartier. The former Dawson's Creek star wowed the crowd in a stunning gown by Valentino.

The floor sweeping dress came in a nude color palette and it was intricately embroidered with beads. We love the loose, billowing silhouette and bohemian vibe that the Italian brand does oh so well. Katie gets two thumbs up from the Fashion Finder team!

Zachary Quinto, ever dapper, arrived for the re-unveiling of the 5th Avenue and 52nd Street shop wearing a navy suit over a floral shirt.

Chloë Grace Moretz wore a rather busy outfit indeed. Strikingly heavy blue eye makeup matched the eastern bluebirds on her dress' black field.

The birds' red bellies, as well as orange tendrils and an orange hem, added even more colour to the dress' surface.

The 19-year-old's blonde hair had been hauled over to one side of her head and cascaded onto her right shoulder.

A pair of ankle-strap stilletos and what appeared to be a diamond bracelet rounded out the look as she posed for the camera.

A mélange of alternating netted or feathered sections found some contrast in simple, gold-coloured ankle-strap stilettos.

Kelly Bensimon, continuing the trend of women wearing white at the Wednesday night event, donned a white dress of her own with three sets of frills - not including those on the cuffs at her elbows.

She was a mound of smiles as she posed alongside a besuited John Demsey, the Executive Group President of The Estée Lauder Companies.

Maisie Plant, who'd coveted and got the jewellery, was the wife of financier Morton Plant, who conceded the property to Cartier in exchange for the addition to his wife's collection.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the rejiggering of the Cartier Mansion was undertaken by Thierry Despont, the man behind the latest refurbishment of the Ritz in Paris.
