Just four months ago she couldn't contain her delight after being accepted to UCLA.

But Ariel Winter revealed on Thursday that she is deferring her university entry for one year.

'Unfortunately this year, due to production schedule, I have to start next year,' the 18-year-old told E! News.

However Ariel assured fans that she absolutely still plans to be a UCLA freshman in 2017, saying: 'I will be starting as a Bruin next year.'

The Modern Family star, who spoke to E! at the Emmys Casting Nominees Reception, plans to major in political science.

In April Ariel had shared a photo of her acceptance email from the prestigious Los Angeles university.

'It's an AMAZING DAY! I'm going to UCLA- thank you to everyone who has been there for me on this journey! #bruinsbaby,' she wrote.

Ariel has a busy schedule as one of the stars of Modern Family, which will kick off its eighth season later this month.

She also voices the titular character in animated children's show Sofia The First and is currently filming drama Dog Years with Burt Reynolds, Chevy Chase and Boyhood's Ellar Coltrane.

While Ariel's acting work is keeping her too busy to start classes right now, UCLA will be a great spot for her to balance her work in Hollywood and her studies.

Meanwhile the actress recently shot down rumours that she is dating Sterling Beaumon.

Although the pair have been seen together on several occasions since Ariel's split from Laurent Claude Gaudette earlier this year, she insists they are just friends.

Last week the teen tweeted a comical emoji of a single slice of toast with 'Hi!' written above it.

She captioned it: 'Everyone thinking I'm taken when I'm just over here like hi I'm single.'
