Tom Ford mixes oversized furs, tie-dye leather, and classic tweed on Western-inspired NYFW runway, and sneaks Gigi Hadid into the middle of the show

  • The designer presented his Fall 2016 collection in New York on Wednesday
  • His new collection includes harness-like statement belts, multicolor fur coats, and all-over sequins
  • Stars in attendance included Karlie Kloss, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Julianne Moore, Tom Hanks, Jon Hamm,  and Neil Patrick Harris

The biggest supermodels to take the runway for a Fashion Week presentation are usually the first down the catwalk — or else they close out the show with the big finale. But at Tom Ford's very exclusive New York Fashion Week show on Wednesday night, Gigi Hadid walked out right in the middle.

It might have been possible to miss the 21-year-old — who came out twice in the middle of the show of both men's and women's apparel — had it not been for that instantly-recognizable supermodel face.

Like the other women to take the runway at the designer's show, Gigi rocked mostly neutral hues, both times accentuated by oversized belts that cinched her middle and stood out. Supermodels Carolyn Murphy and Amber Valetta also modeled in the show.

As modeled by some lesser-known catwalkers, the clothes — a bit '70s, a bit Western — included tweed pencil skirts and exaggerated, cinched-at-the-waist tweed jackets. There was tie-dye leather everywhere, from the harness-like belts to the leopard-lined jackets.

The women strutted their stuff at the Four Seasons in tall leather boots, several of them also decked out in gold, Western-inspired jewelry, while men wore tweed suits and '70s-inspired smoking jackets.

Later in the show, Mr. Ford turned up the glamour with eveningwear, showing late-'70s-inspired beading and sequins, plush velvet, and swishy long hems.

While most designers this month are presenting clothes for Spring 2017, however, Tom Ford is one of the few big names in fashion to try a more immediate model of taking clothes from the runway to stores.

The items shown last night were part of his Fall 2016 collection, and will be available to buy starting Friday morning.

That's good news for the huge number of stars in attendance at the show and after party, who included Karlie Kloss, Cindy Crawford, Julianne Moore, Jon Hamm, Naomi Campbell, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Uma Thurman, Rita Ora, Neil Patrick Harris, Zayn Malik, Alicia Keys, Nicola Peltz, Hailee Steinfeld, Iman, Diane von Furstenberg, Anna Wintour, Carine Roitfeld, Carmelo Anthony, and Leon Bridges.
