Rower Ailish Sheehan dies after fall as she celebrated at world championship

A rower died following a 'freak' accident while celebrating winning a medal at the World University Championships in Poland. Ailish Sheehan, born in Limerick, died in hospital in Poznan on Friday with her family at her bedside, five days after her fatal fall. She had been in a coma since the incident on Sunday night in which she is understood to have suffered a fractured skull and a broken arm. Ailish (pictured left, right and inset) had been celebrating with her team-mates after winning a bronze medal as part of the British women's four crew at the Championships when she fell. Her team-mates and coaches have been left devastated by the tragedy, saying the talented oarswoman was a shining light. Chief coach at University of London Boat Club, where Ailish was a member, Phil Gray said: 'Not only was Ailish a top oarswoman with a significant future in the international side of the sport but she also lit up the club with her humour and laughter. 'She was a great example to younger members and starting next year without her is hard to imagine at the moment especially as she had been elected vice captain. 'But our main thoughts are with Ailish's family who obviously meant so much to her.'

Masterchef star Helen Barker found dead in her home as pensioner is arrested

Police were called to reports of the sudden death of Helen Barker, 38, on Thursday. Officers later arrested a 78-year-old man, who was known to Ms Barker, on suspicion of manslaughter and actual bodily harm. Her body was discovered on Thursday morning at her home in Trowbridge, Wiltshire. But police said the post mortem was inconclusive and further pathological tests will be required to determine a cause of death. Officers later released the pensioner on bail pending further enquiries. Following her death, the family of Ms Barker released a statement calling her 'a talented artist and an accomplished cook'.

The man and woman disgracefully pictured passed out in a car allegedly overdosed on heroin as a toddler was in the backseat have lengthy criminal records. An Ohio police department in Ohio published images of the parents - identified as 50-year-old Rhonda Pasek, whose toddler was in the car, and 47-year-old James Acord - on Facebook. Acord (right of main and bottom right), who was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, endangering children, and slowing or stopping in a road for this incident, has a laundry-list of offenses dating back to the early 1990s. The 47-year-old has previously been charged with crimes ranging from robbery to drinking in public in Florida, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia and Ohio. He also has a history with substance abuse and run-ins with the law in West Virginia. Air strikes that hit a market in the rebel-held northwestern city of Idlib have killed 24 people - a day after Russia and the US agreed a truce in Syria. It was not immediately clear who carried out the raids (pictured top right) that also hit several neighbourhoods in Idlib and wounded at least 90 people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The Britain-based monitor could not immediately confirm how many of the casualties were civilians saying some bodies 'were burned beyond recognition'. This is the moment a jaguar cub was caught thrashing around a swimming pool as it learned how to swim. The confident little jaguar is seen running at full speed before plunging into the pool. But almost immediately, the cub named Cielo looks terrified with her big eyes as she braves the water. The video was uploaded to YouTube by the Black Jaguar White Tiger Foundation, which cares for unwanted and abandoned big cats, and fights to overturn laws that make breeding the creatures legal in Mexico.

The innovative space has a pocket-sized brass bed frame (top left) and mattress, a little chest of drawers and a small piano (bottom left) perfect for a pooch. There is also a little sombrero, a lamp and a painting of dogs playing poker. The retired school teacher said: 'Poncho ended up with quite a little room - he thinks he deserves it all so I guess it's okay.'
