We DO eat... honestly! Victoria Beckham's 'emaciated' models who were blasted as 'skin and bone' after NY Fashion Week show post Instagram snaps of themselves eating pizza and drinking beer

  • Victoria Beckham used 'emaciated' girls on the catwalk at her SS17 show
  • Teenagers Camille Hurel and Jessie Bloemendaal have of 24-inch waists
  • Mrs Beckham's fans have blasted them as 'skin and bone' on social media
  • But the models prove on Instagram that they love a good square meal
  • Ondria Hardin claims her idea of 'happiness' is yoga and a bottle of beer

Her runway show at New York fashion week hit headlines for all the wrong reasons.

When Victoria Beckham debuted her SS17 collection this week, she drew sharp criticism once again for her use of size 4 models - their thin frames accentuated by barely-there outfits which highlighted taut tummies and protruding ribs.

But despite the ex-Spice Girl coming under fire for her show - Daily Mail columnist Sarah Vine suggested the 'emaciated' models looked like 'half-starved space cadets - if their social media accounts are anything to go by, it seems the mannequins are at pains to prove that they can eat just as much as the next person - enjoying pizza, bacon and bottles of beer.

Mrs Beckham, 42, cast models including Ondria Hardinz and 15-year-old Julia Ratner who, with their 23in waists, are smaller than a UK size 4 (US size 0).

Their fellow models included Jessie Bloemendaal, French model Camille Hurel, Argentinian Mica Arganaraz, and Iris Landstra - all with waists measuring 24in or less. And as pictures emerged from the show on social media, fashion fans were quick to blast the models as 'skin and bone'.

Yet Dutch-born teen model Jessie Bloemendaal, who divides her time between Amsterdam, Berlin, London and Barcelona, regularly posts pictures of her mouth-watering meals - most recently spinach-stuffed chicken wrapped in bacon with a mound of roasted vegetables on the side. She captioned it: '#proud'.

Mrs Beckham has spoken out against skinny models in the past. In 2010, she pledged to follow the Beauty Is Health campaign created by the Council Of Fashion Designers Of America and ban extremely thin models from her shows.

‘I had a casting last week and had some terribly thin girls come in, and it wouldn’t have worked,’ she said at the time. She’s also insisted her clothes are for women of all shapes and sizes.

Yet after Victoria shared pictures from her most recent show on Instagram, her 12 million followers fell into a heated debate over the choice of casting.

One wrote: 'It would be so refreshing to see @victoriabeckham employ more natural sized models. All I see is skin and bones, not the clothes.'

While sharonsparkle76 wrote: 'I think its very naive of you to suggest that these girls are naturally skinny. Yes, some people are, however its no secret that models are told to starve themselves and are fat shamed if they are a size 8.'

However one leaped to the models' defence, pointing out: 'It's not a fact, they look fine just because they're thin doesn't mean they're unhealthy.'

Another follower added: 'It is offensive to call someone anorexic or skeleton just as it is offensive to call someone fat or whatever. I find it heartbreaking that women judge other women's bodies.'

Back in September 2015, fans took to social media to complain that Victoria had sent a 'parade of skeletons' down the catwalk at her Spring/Summer 2016 show in New York.

She was particularly chastised for using Peyton List, a frail-looking 17-year-old model, to close the show, which was attended by the designer's husband David and Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

Hundreds of Victoria’s 15 million-strong social media following made their feelings known to the designer, inundating her with messages about her choice of models.

The mother-of-four defended herself against the criticism, insisting that her casting director liaised with the modelling agencies and ensured all the girls were healthy before the show.

'They're young, they're thin, but that doesn't mean they're ill,' Victoria said in an interview with the Telegraph.

SARAH VINE'S VERDICT ON VICTORIA BECKHAM'S SS17 SHOW

'The clothes themselves seem to have been conceived to highlight the thinness of the wearer, to deliberately exclude anyone for whom a small strip of satin might not be an adequate covering.

'One ensemble, a pair of shiny white satin bloomers paired with a cross- body sash and knee-high white boots, made the wearer look like a half-starved space cadet.

'Most dresses were designed to highlight ribs, tummies and bone-thin arms thanks to cutouts and corsetting, meaning no one over a size 12 could ever consider putting them on. Even the fabrics — crushed velvet and silks — were unforgiving, made to highlight flat planes of the body, not curves.

'The models’ bleached eyebrows, lank, austere hair and sunken expressions also contributed to the illusion of illness. One of the first things that anorexia does to the body is cause hair loss and dark circles, and it seemed to me at least, the make-up was deliberately designed to give this impression.

'One after another they came, this silent, sullen army of the starving, ribs and shoulder-blades on show, skeletal forms visible through unforgiving shapes and fabrics.

'This is "thinspiration" in fashion form, the catwalk version of those thigh-gap pictures that celebrities like to post on social media site Instagram in order to remind mere mortals of their innate physical superiority.'
