Open a bank account with a selfie: HSBC rolls out new technology for its business customers
Bank customers can for the first time open accounts by taking a photo of themselves with their mobile phone.
HSBC has rolled out the technology for its business customers — and Lloyds Bank has conducted a trial for similar 'selfie' technology.
If it is successful, some banks could open the service up to personal customers.
HSBC has rolled out technology allowing accounts to be opened with a photograph for its business customers
HSBC customers who want to open a business account with a photo need to download a free app on their phone called HSBC Business Identification.
Select a form of photo ID, a passport or driver's licence, and take a picture of it with your camera phone.
Then do the same with a utility bill confirming your address. Finally take a photo of your own face.
If the selfie matches your photo ID, HSBC will open your account in 48 hours.
Meanwhile, customers at First Direct can access their bank accounts using just their voice.
Instead of a password and answering security questions, customers who sign up are asked to make a voice recording, which is then stored by the bank.
When the customer next logs in, special technology will compare the customer's voice with the recording. If it matches, they can access their account.
